Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed that President William Ruto has been trying to reach out to him in an effort to mend ties, months after his impeachment.
Speaking in a media interview on Monday, June 16, 2025, the former Deputy President said that President Ruto has been contacting him through phone calls.
However, the DCP party leader has remained reluctant to reconcile, describing Ruto as an enemy of the Mount Kenya region.
“President Ruto attempted to call me, but I don’t have time for him, so I ignored his call,” the former Deputy President.
Gachagua Reveals He Has Been Ignoring Calls from President Ruto
At the same time, the former Deputy President criticized the ongoing empowerment programs in some parts of the country, saying other regions are receiving meaningful support while the Mount Kenya region is being mocked with items that add no real value.
“It’s very embarrassing to see that the kind of Empowerment being brought in in Mt Kenya is beans while other places like Kapseret people are being empowered with matatus and motorbikes,” the DCP party leader said.

The former Deputy President also addressed his presidential ambition, saying he is willing to shelve it if doing so would prevent President Ruto from securing a second term.
“I am a presidential candidate, but if we sit down as the opposition and determine that my candidature would lead to William Ruto winning a second term, I will withdraw and support Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, or Eugene Wamalwa—whichever of them is best positioned to challenge Ruto.
They have also said they would support me if I garner enough support, because the most important thing is to send Ruto home,” Gachagua said.
Former DP Urges Gen Z to Register as Voters
The former Deputy President also encouraged Gen Z to register as voters, expressing confidence that the 2027 elections would be free and fair, even as he raised concerns about the credibility of the newly appointed IEBC commissioners.

Additionally, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua said that sovereign power belongs to the people of Kenya and must never be undermined by individuals or institutions.
“No individual, no leader, and no authority can claim to hold the sovereign right to block or deny Kenyans their fundamental right to exercise their will. Democracy is the voice of the people, and it is through their collective voice that change, progress, and justice are achieved,” the DCP party leader said.
