Safaricom PLC has notified customers of a planned maintenance on its M-PESA system on Monday, June 24, 2024.
The maintenance will take place from 1 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.
During this time, all M-PESA services will be unavailable. However, other services, including calls, data, and SMS, will remain operational.
Safaricom stated that the timing of the maintenance was chosen to minimize inconvenience to customers.
“We are constantly enhancing our services to provide our customers with more innovations and a better experience,” the company said in a statement.
However, Safaricom apologized for any inconvenience caused and thanked customers for their patience.
“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience,” the statement further read.
Snitching Protesters to DCI
This comes after Safaricom addressed concerns raised by citizens that the company is assisting the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in tracking protesters who participated in the anti-finance bill protests.

In response, Safaricom dismissed these claims as mere rumors and assured the public that there was no truth to the allegations.
“Ata kama ni story za jaba, hapa hapana,” said the company.
The statement by the company follows a tweet by an X user who raised an alarm over the issue, alleging that the DCI was tracking and rounding up protestors with the company’s help.
“DCI are picking people one by one with the aid of Safaricom, folks are being tracked to their doorsteps.”
“It’s a reaction I anticipated from this regime, And I’ve kept tweeting that hii kitu, they’ll neuter it by all means,” remarked Maverick Aoko.
Tension Over Protests
The protests in the country have raised tension ahead of the fate on Finance bill 2024.

Currently, citizens are asking about the whereabouts of “Crazy Nairobian,” a notable but currently absent figure in the local social media scene.
Additionally, twenty-five human rights associations have called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to clarify the whereabouts of content creator Billy Simani, also known as “Crazy Nairobian”.
In the statement, the associations called for immediate clarification on the location and condition of Billy Simani, among other demands.
