Sakaja Orders Repainting of All Nairobi Buildings in 90 Days

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has issued an order to all building owners within the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

Speaking on Sunday, January 19, Sakaja ordered that all landlords should ensure that every building within the city is repainted in the following 90 days.

However, the governor did not specify whether the landlords will be expected to paint the buildings a specific colour, noting that a circular will soon be released.

“To everyone who has a building in Nairobi Central Business District (CBD), we are issuing a circular tomorrow directing that all those buildings must be repainted in 90 days.

“In 90 days we must have a fresh coat of paint, while the rest of us will work on restoring roads within Nairobi,” said the governor.

Is Sakaja Turning Nairobi into Mombasa?

The move is similar to one that was made to residents of Mombasa County in 2018, ordering all landlords to uniformly paint all buildings.

Residential and business premises were to be painted orange, with blue strips framing the windows and doors and owners who failed to comply would face penalties.

However, some buildings were exempted from the directive, including the iconic Fort Jesus, Mombasa Law Courts, government offices, and residences occupied by security personnel such as police stations.

According to the county, its economy heavily depended largely on tourism, and the beautification initiative was part of efforts to attract more visitors to the coastal town along the Indian Ocean.

The repainting campaign was set to begin in Old Town, known for its historic architecture, before expanding to other areas.

Recent Changes Made in Nairobi

In a statement dated Tuesday, January 13, the Nairobi County Chief Environment Officer Geofrey Mosiria indicated that the move followed inspections conducted within the city.

Further, he stated that the inspection revealed that numerous buildings lack proper waste disposal mechanisms, posing significant environmental and public health concerns.

Therefore, all landlords and businesses have been directed to adopt immediate compliance with solid waste management regulations.

At the same time, the county government issued a notice to matatu owners due to disruptions caused by their activities during city cleaning.

Mosiria noted that matatu stages remain occupied at night affecting cleaning efforts.

Further, he said that some vehicles were not properly maintained, contributing to environmental degradation.
