UDA Clarifies Kindiki’s Role in New Party After Merger with ANC

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has issued a statement clarifying the role of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki following its merger with the Amani National Congress (ANC) and the subsequent naming of party officials.

In a statement, UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar expressed the party’s concern over an unprecedented rise in fake news, including reports from some mainstream media outlets.

Omar described the trend as a “deliberate and well-orchestrated scheme of misinformation aimed at misleading citizens and undermining government and societal initiatives.”

He clarified that Deputy President Kithure Kindiki will serve as the 1st Deputy Party Leader of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), while Lamu Governor Issa Timamy, who was also the acting party leader of the Amani National Congress (ANC), will assume the role of 2nd Deputy Party Leader.

UDA Deputy Party Leader Named

UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire, during a press briefing at State House Nairobi on Friday, January 17, announced that the party has incorporated ANC’s identity symbols, including its logo, imagery, and topography, into the new outfit.

“The UDA party and the Amani National Congress have today merged as one known as United Democratic Alliance party that is also going to change name in the branding,” said Mbarire.

“The party has incorporated ANC’s identity symbols in the logo, imagery topography brand of the new merger party and shall undertake a myriad of other changes in the governance and operations of the new party.”

She stated that the Deputy Party Leader will be Lamu Governor Issa Timamy while ANC Chairperson Kelvin Lunani will take on the role of Vice Chairman of the party.

At the same time, Emuhaya Member of Parliament Omboko Milema, who previously held the position of ANC Secretary General, will now serve as the Deputy Secretary General of the party.

Mbarire stated that, as part of the merger, the ANC Secretariat will also come on board, to ensure a seamless integration of both parties.

“The following officials have been designated as the new officials of the new party effective immediately. Deputy Party leader will be Issa Timamy Vice Chairman Kelvin Lunani, Deputy SG Omboko Milemba. Further to that we are going to bring in ANC Secretariat members into the new formation,” Mbarire added.

She also mentioned that the UDA party shall undertake merger activities including harmonization of the core values, rebranding, membership recruitment drive among other post-merger activities.

Additionally, Mbarire said they have formed a merger committee that will ensure that within 90 days all these activities will happen.

However, the positions of party leader, chairperson, and secretary general of UDA remain unchanged. This means that the party leader is still President William Ruto, Chairperson is Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, and EALA MP Hussein Omar continues as the secretary general.

ANC Merging with UDA

The ANC officially approved a merger with the UDA in August 2024, a decision made during a high-profile meeting held in Lamu County, hosted by Governor Issa Timamy.

The meeting brought together over 140 members of the Amani Council, along with Members of Parliament and Members of County Assemblies affiliated with the party.

Political analysts described the move as a major political gamble that could turn politically expensive for Mudavadi, especially for his ambition to succeed Ruto in 2032.
