Latest police Report on Femicide
A March 11 press release by the National Police Service (NPS) indicated that there were proactive measures taken to prevent femicide and gender-based violence (GBV) in Kenya.
The report acknowledged the rising cases of GBV and outlined the National Police Service’s response, which includes collaboration with stakeholders, enhanced investigative units, and specialized teams.
Further, NPS noted that there were some sucessful investigations conducted in high profile cases including the murder of Marybell Amankor Kapolong in 2018, with the perpetrator sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Also, the widely reported Monica Nyawira Kimani case, in which Joseph Irungu alias “Jowie” was sentenced to life imprisonment and the 2022 murder of Sheilah Adhiambo Lumumba, leading to the perpetrator’s 30-year prison sentence was highlighted.
The recent arrests of suspects involved in multiple murders, such as Hashim Dagane Muhumed and George Mwenda Mutegi, whose cases are ongoing were noted as successful cases where law enforcement handles femicide cases in the country.
“To further address GBV, the police have established Gender Desks and Child Protection Units at police stations, increased training for officers, and launched “POLICARE,” a one-stop center providing legal, medical, and psychological support for survivors,” stated NPS.
