Hiring police officers for private events in Kenya, such as weddings or corporate functions, is possible under specific legal procedures.

Police convoys provide safety and security for attendees, ensuring smooth movement and protection at private or high-profile events.

According to the National Police Service Act (NO 11A of 2011), the Inspector General may deploy an officer for private use only for the protection of goods.

Elsewhere, police escorts are often requested during private events to offer security for the hosts and their guests.

“Private use of police officers, The Inspector-General may, on application by any person, station an officer for duty at such place and for such period as the Inspector-General may approve.  Notwithstanding the subsection, the Inspector-General shall only deploy an officer for private use for the protection of the public good or interest. The monies paid for the private use of the police, as specified in subsection, shall be paid to the Treasury.  The Inspector-General shall make regulations generally to have effect under this section.” Read part of the Act.

Process on How to Hire Police Officers, Costs, and Rules in Kenya

To hire a police convoy for an event, one is required to conduct or visit to the nearest police station and explain the need for the police.

They will then contact the National Police Service, which will assess your request to determine whether it can be accommodated.

Police officers will then be authorized by the area station or the NPS and later pay the required fee for the service, depending on your needs.

Notwithstanding the subsection, the Inspector-General shall only deploy an officer for private use for the protection of the public good or interest.

Also, the monies paid for the private use of the police, as specified in subsection, shall be paid to the Treasury.

The Inspector-General shall make regulations generally to have effect under this section.

Cost and Deployment Considerations

Costs may include allowances, transport, and overtime fees. However, security ranks, armed vs unarmed status, and durations play a key role in determining the cost of the police deployment.

The National Police Service Act requires that all procedures comply with Kenya’s law governing police deployments.

The discussion about hiring police escorts resurfaced online after a recent viral clip showing a police convoy during the wedding of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi’s son.

The escort sparked mixed reactions online, with some Kenyans questioning whether such security should be reserved for high-ranking officials, while others argued that anyone can legally hire police officers if they follow the proper procedures.

“You just hire them the way professional mourners are hired during burials”, stated Mwirigi Allan

“It’s allowed to have hired police in your wedding, no crime here,” said Cherry

“It’s called a state wedding. Kaa kwa serikali usikie utamu huo,” said Ados Nyanjwa.
