Kingdom Bank, a subsidiary of the Co-operative Bank of Kenya since its acquisition in August 2020, focuses on supporting micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), including youth- and women-owned businesses.
Its origins trace back to a charitable trust founded by 50 destitute families living on the streets of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital.
In March 2010, the institution merged with City Finance Bank (CFB), a small private financial services provider that had previously catered to large corporations and high-net-worth clients.
The merger saw CFB acquire the institution and adopt the name of its new acquisition, transforming it into a fully licensed commercial bank.
Other investors in the bank have included Baraka Africa Fund (BAF) and individual shareholders. In March 2020, the Co-operative Bank of Kenya announced its proposal to acquire Kingdom Bank.
Co-operative Bank of Kenya acquired 90% ownership of Kingdom Bank by subscribing to 224,153,541 new class A ordinary shares.
As of December 2023, the bank reported total assets of Ksh 36.7 billion and a profit before tax of Ksh 1.08 billion.
Its interest income stood at Ksh 3.7 billion, while non-interest income reached Ksh 533.7 million.
The bank operates 23 branches and has continued to expand its presence across the country. It provides a range of financial services aimed at meeting the needs of its customers, particularly in the MSME sector.
