M-PESA has maintained its position as the key revenue contributor to the Safaricom group, as the users’ transactions in the fiscal year ending March 2026 hit KSh 41.68 trillion.
According to the financial performance report by Safaricom dated May 7, the increase in M-Pesa transactions contributed to 45.6% of Kenya’s service revenue.
The increment further influenced the overall service revenue of the Safaricom Group by 11.5% to KSh 414.1 billion.
M-Pesa contributions to the service revenue were recorded to have a growth of 13.4% rate that is estimated at 182.7%.
Additionally, the increase in the growth rate was due to high customer activity and expanded merchant acceptance of the Pochi la Biashara and Lipa na M-Pesa features.
“Kenya Business Review M-PESA contributed 45.6% of Kenya’s service revenue, growing 13.4% YoY to KSh 182.7Bn, supported by higher customer activity and expanded merchant acceptance across Pochi and Lipa na M-PESA,” Safaricom Group FY2026 Annual Results indicated.

M-Pesa Revenue Contribution
According to the report, the transactional values from users of the money unit app increased by 25.1% to 46.41 billion, while the total transaction value reached KSh 41.68 trillion.
Further, the micro transactions in the money transfer app accounted for 17.1 billion, equivalent to 36.8% of the total transaction volume.
Records on customer bases in a month, Safaricom noted that active customers in a single month increased by 14.5% to 40.99 million.
A 71.0% expansion in the merchant base, totaling 3.1 million, was also recorded in the M-Pesa revenue collection contribution data.
In addition, the transactions carried out through the money transfer unit feature Pochi La Biashara increased by 81.5% to 2.1 million in the fiscal year ending March 2026.
Further, users transacting via the Lipa na M-PESA merchant feature reached 1.0 million.
M-PESA Kenya recorded a higher total value and volume than M-PESA Ethiopia, despite the Ethiopian operation recording higher growth rates. The Ethiopian operation recorded a transactional value of ETB 32.5 billion, approximately KSh 28.6 billion.
In terms of active users, Ethiopia had 5.2 million in 90 days, while Kenya had 40.99 million in only 30 days, surpassing Ethiopia not only in revenue and transaction value but also in customer base.

Safaricom Financial Service Evolving
Over the years, Safaricom has modified the M-Pesa app to serve not only as a payment platform but also as a financial service provider through fintech 2.0 technology.
In an attempt to improve its services, Safaricom launched the Ziidi Trader feature in the 2026 financial year.
Ziidi Traders features enabled customers to trade listed securities directly from their mobile phones with ease.
Further, Safaricom adopted a digital savings and investment proposition, raising the wealth management of assets to KSh 21.0 billion through money market fund features (Ziidi MMF).
Additionally, Safaricom is building digital public infrastructure through enhanced payments and APIs, leveraging M-Pesa.
As of the financial year ended March 2026, Safaricom recorded a total dividend payout of KSh 80.13 billion, a 66.7% increase, and net income of KSh 99.7 billion, the highest in its history.
