Safaricom PLC has officially surpassed 50 million customers on its mobile network in Kenya, setting a new record as it prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary in October.
The announcement marks a historic milestone for Kenya’s largest telecommunications company, which began operations in 2000 with just 17,000 subscribers.
Safaricom now serves over 50 million Kenyans, nearly the entire adult population, and continues to expand its footprint beyond borders.
“We are honoured by the trust that over 50 million Kenyans have placed in us. This milestone reflects the deep connection we’ve built over the past two and a half decades, and as we approach our silver jubilee, we recommit to creating meaningful experiences and solutions for our customers,” said Dr. Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom.

Safaricom on Why and How it has Grown
Safaricom has attributed the growth partly to a nationwide customer appreciation campaign that has run for a year, which included reward programs such as Sambaza Furaha and M-PESA Sokoni.
These initiatives were designed to bring services and appreciation closer to the people, especially in underserved regions, while celebrating the loyalty of long-erm subscribers.
Further, the telco announced a major milestone in Ethiopia, where it recently crossed 10 million customers since entering the market in 2022.
“Our journey has always been about putting customers first. Looking ahead, we will focus on personalizing customer experiences and accelerating digital transformation for households, businesses, and entire communities,” Ndegwa added.

Company History and Success
Since its launch, Safaricom has played a key role in transforming Kenya’s mobile and financial landscape.
In 2007, the company introduced M-PESA, a revolutionary mobile money platform that changed how millions of Kenyans save, spend, and send money.
M-PESA has now evolved into a full-fledged digital ecosystem supporting businesses, households, and informal traders.
Aside from mobile money, Safaricom has heavily invested in connectivity, pioneering 3G, 4G, and most recently 5G networks to improve internet access across the country.
Moreover, its home and business internet solutions have contributed to Kenya’s fast-growing digital economy.
