How Rosemary Rose through the Ranks
Born in Meru on the slopes of Mount Kenya, Rosemary Mugambi’s father was a cook in Rumuruti, while her mother worked at home.
Her journey to success began when she offered to move in with her sister who has just secured a job in Machakos as a secretary in the early 1960s.
Mugambi went to Machakos, then to Kampala, and back to Nairobi.
Later, she graduated from Loreto Convent Msongari high school in 1982, with a dream of becoming a journalist.
However, she visited the newly opened Utalii College and joined after she was fascinated listening to the head of the college talk about tourism.
Her first internship at Utalii was at the Jacaranda Hotel in Nairobi’s Westlands.
“I went dressed smartly” she recalls with a laugh. And the manager sent her to the kitchen. I was shown a sack of potatoes and asked to get to work with a knife — not even a potato peeler.
“That was my first day as an intern and I returned to college with calloused hands while the rest of the class had more interesting work experiences to relate.
“I learnt a big lesson here, that if you want to be a great manager, start at the bottom,” she said in a past interview with the East African.
Furthermore, she got a job at Mombasa Serena as the Human resources manager in the early 1990s after moving from Samburu Serena where she was an assistant manager.
