History Of Sopa Lodges Kenya Establishment and Expansion
Sopa Lodges Kenya was established in 1986 with the opening of Masai Mara Sopa Lodge, making it one of the earliest safari lodges in the Masai Mara National Reserve.
Located on the slopes of the Oloolaimutia Hills in Narok County, the lodge was designed using traditional African architectural styles and featured 50 guest cottages.
The launch of Masai Mara Sopa Lodge marked the beginning of the company’s presence in East Africa’s hospitality sector.
Over the years, Sopa Lodges expanded its footprint across Kenya, building a network of properties in some of the country’s leading wildlife and tourism destinations.
During the 1990s and 2000s, the company added several Kenyan properties, including
- Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort – Located along the tranquil shores of Lake Naivasha, set in 150 acres of grassland
- Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge – Situated in Lake Nakuru National Park, known for giraffe viewing and the Great Rift Valley
- Amboseli Sopa Lodge – Located in Amboseli National Park near Mount Kilimanjaro
- Samburu Sopa Lodge – Located in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya, known for elephant and rhino viewing
These lodges were strategically established in national parks, reserves, and lakeside locations known for wildlife viewing and scenic landscapes.

Later, the Sopa Lodges expanded into Tanzania, establishing the following;
- Tarangire Sopa Lodge – Located in Tarangire National Park
- Serengeti Sopa Lodge – Located in Serengeti National Park
- Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge – Located in Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Current Status Of the Sopa Lodges in East Africa
As of 2026, Sopa Lodges operates eight safari properties across Kenya and Tanzania, with a combined accommodation capacity of 632 rooms.
The company’s Kenyan portfolio includes lodges in Amboseli, Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara and Samburu, while its Tanzanian operations cover Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

According to company information, Sopa Lodges is one of the largest providers of cottage-style safari accommodation in East Africa.
The company has also been in operation for nearly four decades, having been established in 1986.
Sopa Lodges Kenya maintains its headquarters at Peponi Plaza on Peponi Road in Nairobi, while its Tanzania office is located at Sopa Plaza, 99 Serengeti Road, Arusha, supporting operations across the two countries.
