Absa Bank Kenya has announced the retirement of Japheth Olende from its Board of Directors, ending a seven-year tenure marked by strategic leadership and deep commitment to corporate governance.
Olende retired as an Independent Non-Executive Director effective May 22, 2025, following the bank’s 46th Annual General Meeting.
He did not seek re-election in accordance with the company’s rotation policy and the age stipulation for board members.
Appointed to the board in March 2018, Olende has been a steady hand during a period of significant transformation for the bank.

He served as Chair of the Credit Committee and was an active member of the Corporate Governance, Nominations and Remuneration Committee.

His leadership extended to Absa’s subsidiary boards, including Absa Asset Management Ltd. and Absa Bancassurance Intermediary Ltd., where he served as Chairperson.
“Mr. Olende brought invaluable insight and a wealth of experience that helped shape our governance structure and strategic direction,” said Charles Muchene, Chairman of Absa Bank Kenya Plc.

Career Profile
Beyond Absa, Olende’s influence spans both the public and private sectors.
He currently serves on boards including Ler Ltd., Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, Jumbo Chem Company Ltd., and Obg Co. Ltd.
He is also a member of the Chartered Insurance Institute and the Institute of Directors (Kenya).
Previously, he held leadership roles with the Retirement Benefits Authority, AIG Kenya and Uganda, the Kenya Private Sector Alliance, and the American Chamber of Commerce in Kenya, where he served as President.

His academic and professional credentials include a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Nairobi and recognition as a Chartered Insurer by the Chartered Insurance Institute in London.
