Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has launched an offensive against Russia’s drone manufacturing sector, marking a significant escalation in Ukraine’s economic warfare against Russia.

The strike, confirmed by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), targeted the Orsknefteorgsintez industrial complex, a key site in Russia’s drone manufacturing and energy infrastructure.

The attack occurred midday, prompting the temporary suspension of operations at the local airport and triggering emergency response protocols.

The Orsk facility is believed to house components and logistics support for the Yelabuga drone factory, which produces the Geran-2 strike drones, Russia’s version of Iran’s Shahed-136.

These drones have been used extensively in Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

The use of domestically produced and modified commercial drones, combined with precise intelligence and coordination between special operations and unmanned systems units, has enabled Kyiv to conduct deep strikes with increasing frequency and accuracy.

Strategic Shift in the War

The destruction of the drone plant signals Ukraine’s growing capability to hit critical assets deep inside Russian territory.

Analysts view the strike as part of a deliberate strategy to cripple production lines supporting attacks on Ukrainian cities.

Rather than focusing solely on front-line battles, the Ukrainian military has increasingly targeted logistics, fuel depots, and industrial hubs believed to feed the Russian war machine.

Military analyst Oleh Zhdanov said the latest strike signals a shift from defensive posturing to offensive deterrence.

“Ukraine is demonstrating that it can reach the very core of Russia’s military industry,” he noted. “The goal is to make continued aggression too costly to sustain.”

Zelensky’s Retaliation After Heavy Air Raids

The strike came hours after a wave of missile and drone attacks hit major Ukrainian cities, including Odesa, Kharkiv, and Dnipro, leaving dozens dead and widespread power outages.

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the bombardment as “terror against civilians” and vowed swift retribution.

“The aggressor will feel the consequences of every strike on our people. Those who produce and launch these drones will not find safety anywhere.”

Military sources described the retaliatory attack as carefully planned and executed using domestically produced long-range drones.

The facility targeted was reportedly part of the supply network sustaining Russia’s aerial campaign, assembling components imported from Iran and domestic suppliers.

Escalation Risks Mount

The strike risks deepening an already volatile conflict, as both sides continue to escalate beyond traditional front lines.

Western diplomats have expressed concern that continued long-range attacks could provoke wider retaliation, though they maintained that Ukraine retains the right to defend its territory and people.

European Union Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell urged restraint, while reaffirming the Union’s solidarity with Kyiv.

“Every nation has the right to protect itself from aggression, but we must collectively avoid steps that could expand the war further into Europe.”

Global reactions

Global reaction to the destruction of Russia’s drone factory was sharp and divided.

The United States reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s right to self-defence but cautioned against operations that could expand the conflict beyond its borders.

China called for calm and dialogue, warning that attacks deep inside Russia threatened to derail peace efforts.

India reiterated its call for negotiation, and the United Nations expressed concern over the mounting civilian suffering.
