Nairobi County, through Governor Sakaja Johnson, has launched a citywide clean-up exercise as it prepares for expected heavy rains.
In a statement, Nairobi County has announced a citywide clean-up scheduled for Saturday, October 10, to mark Mazingira Day as the county steps up preparations for expected heavy rains.
“The Governor also invited Nairobi residents to join a citywide clean-up on Saturday, October 10, to mark Mazingira Day, urging communities, businesses and institutions to make environmental responsibility a daily habit.”
Sakaja Calls Nairobi Inhabitants For City Clean-Up
Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson called on residents, communities, businesses and institutions to participate in the exercise and make environmental responsibility a daily habit.
The Governor also urged residents to take responsibility for their surroundings, calling on every household, business and institution to maintain at least 100 meters around their premises.
“Nairobi Lazima Iwork is not just about what the county government does. It is about what each one of us does. If every Nairobi resident takes responsibility for the space around them, keeps their neighborhood clean and protects our drainage, we will build the Nairobi we all want to see,” he said.
Ongoing Citywide Mega Clean-up
Ahead of the October 10 exercise, Sakaja has led an ongoing citywide mega clean-up across all 17 sub-counties.
According to Sakaja, the exercise has brought together the county’s 4,500-strong Green Army, county staff, residents, businesses and other stakeholders.
The clean-up targets neighborhoods, roads and drainage channels as the county prepares for the expected rains.
Nairobi currently collects about 3,200 tonnes of garbage daily.
Green Nairobi CEC Maureen Njeri said the campaign aims to shift the city from relying solely on the county to one where residents actively maintain their surroundings.

The county has also intensified efforts to clear drainage channels ahead of the rains.
Residents have been warned against dumping waste in waterways, which can worsen flooding during heavy rainfall.
