A couple from Narok has been arrested for allegedly assaulting their two young children, aged two and seven, using a heated machete.

The disturbing incident came to light when a neighbor noticed the children’s injuries on July 28 and reported their claims of abuse to the relevant authorities.

While speaking to media, the neighbor identified as Ruth Nathan, recounted how the children approached her, revealing the severe burns on their arms.

“The children came to me and informed me that they had been beaten by their parents, upon taking a closer look at them, I observed that they had burns on their arms,” explained the neighbor.

Alarmed by their injuries, she questioned them on how they got such wounds and they explained that it was their mother who had placed a machete in the fire and then used it on their skin as punishment for eating sugar stored in the house.

Couple Arrested After Neighbours Raises Alarm

Concerned for their safety, the neighbor alerted the local village headman, who then contacted the area chief, leading to the couple’s swift arrest.

“Upon further inquiry they told me that their mother had placed a machete on a fire and then proceeded to place it on their skin, when I learnt of this, I knew I had to act so I informed the village headman who informed the chief.”

“When I asked the children why their mother had burnt them with the machete, they explained to me that it was because they had eaten sugar in the house,” said the neighbor.

Zainab Mohammed, a child officer who responded to the scene, confirmed that the children were taken to the Narok Police Station before being rushed to Narok County Referral Hospital for medical attention.

Currently, the parents remain in custody, awaiting court proceedings, while the children are in protective custody until a safe environment can be arranged for them.

Similar Incidents of Violence Towards Children

This case echoes a similar incident that occurred on 16 July 2024, where a woman allegedly killed her two children in Kirinyanga County moments after picking them up from school.

Residents claimed that the woman picked up her two children from a nearby nursery school, stating that she had an urgent funeral to attend with them.

She then reportedly took them to a swamp in the Ndia area of Kirinyaga County, where she allegedly drowned them.

“She went to the school where one of her kids was studying and asked the teachers to give her the kid, stating that they were supposed to attend a burial,” said a local resident.

“She was given the child, then she came with both of them and threw them in this swamp,” the resident explained.

Following the grim discovery of the children’s bodies in the swamp, police promptly arrived at the scene and took the bodies to the morgue as onlookers watched in disbelief, questioning why a mother would take the lives of her own children.
