Four police officers are among six suspects arrested for stealing Ksh 2.2 million from an accountant’s car on Monday, June 3.
The six are believed to have trailed the accountant from a bank in Utawala, before breaking into his car and disappearing with money.
The DCI in a statement made on Thursday, June 6, 2024, said that the six suspects were arrested following combined efforts of officers drawn from DCI Nairobi region and Kayole sub-county.
“The six, three of whom are a police sergeant, a corporal and a constable from Kasarani Police Station, a police constable from Ruai police station and two civilians were arrested at the Kasarani Police Station public parking yard, by a combined team of sleuths from DCI Nairobi region and Kayole sub-county,” read a statement by the DCI.
During the arrest, the DCI noted that a total of Sh473,000 believed to be part of the stolen amount was recovered from the six.
Details of How the Robbery Happened
The incident unfolded when the victim, an accountant who works at Rophine International School, went to withdraw money from a bank in Utawala.
Upon arriving at the school, he parked his car outside and took some amount from the withdrawn sum as he allegedly could not carry the whole amount, he then locked the car, and entered the school compound.

However, when he went back to pick more cash, he found the car broken into and the millions missing.
The incident was then reported at Mihang’o Police Station on June 3, with the accountant noting that he had withdrawn an amount in excess of Ksh 2.2 million meant for the payment of casual workers at the school.
“Unbeknownst to him (or otherwise), sheer-greed miscreants using a saloon car Reg. No. KCR 959D were hot on his trail right from when he parked his car outside the bank to when he left with the load of cash,” said the DCI.
Detectives Corner the Police Officers in Kasarani
The police launched investigations into the matter and were able to track down the suspects using CCTV analysis and intelligence, leading them to the Kasarani Police Station.
Upon arriving at the location, the detectives found out that the suspects had been picked moments earlier by unknown people in a Subaru car.
“Further intelligence led the team to the Kasarani station, where the six were ambushed in a GK vehicle and forced to identify themselves in the presence of the Sub-County Police Commander, his deputy and the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer.”

The DCI sub-county head confirmed that the arrested officers were neither on official duty to Utawala nor working under his instructions.
“Upon search, Sh350,000 was found in the car and another Sh123,000 retrieved from their pockets.”
“Further two motor vehicles, one belonging to the Ruai officer and another belonging to the 5th suspect (Magwaga) which were parked at the yard were detained.”
The suspects are currently in custody pending further investigations.
