The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed that drug traffickers are becoming increasingly creative in their smuggling methods as the fight against narcotics continues.
This is after a trafficker in Siaya attempted to ship a suspicious package to Mombasa, concealing the cargo in a nylon sack, with the plan appearing foolproof.
“In the ongoing battle against trafficking in narcotics, smugglers are constantly finding new tricks to outsmart the authorities and hide their illegal goods,” DCI stated on Sunday, September 8.
According to the DCI, the suspicious package was being inspected at the booking office when the trafficker mysteriously vanished, raising alarm for the vigilant attendant.
DCI Uncovers Bhang Hid Under Bananas
The attendant quickly alerted law enforcers, who discovered that the suspect had concealed the bhang under a layer of raw bananas.
“Sensing something fishy, the attendant alerted the police, and a swift response was mounted. Upon opening the sack, the officers were greeted by a surprising sight – a layer of raw bananas,” DCI added.

“But beneath the bananas lay a whopping 245 long rolls of cannabis sativa, weighing 17.5 kilograms.”
Furthermore, the seized narcotics were swiftly taken to the safe confines of Siaya Police Station, as a relentless pursuit for the elusive trafficker is currently underway.
The DCI reaffirmed its commitment to the war against narcotics trafficking, striving to stay one step ahead of the ever-evolving tactics employed by these cunning individuals.
Tricks Used by Smugglers
Drug trafficking cases have been recorded in the country as the smugglers continue to employ new tactics in the illegal business.
In August 29, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Investigation Department and the DCI In a joint operation unveiled a unique concealment trick used by unscrupulous traders in an ethanol smuggling racket.
Additionally, KRA said the operation resulted in the seizure of 40,971 litres of smuggled ethanol valued at Ksh 26.9 million.
The revenue authority also noted that the ethanol was concealed as imported molasses from a neighboring country and through the interception, tax loss of over Ksh 20.5 million was averted.
Similarly, on August 1, undercover detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) apprehended a drug trafficker who was disguising herself as a regular passenger.
The suspect, identified as Bioma Alice Gbassay from Sierra Leone, attempted to evade security checks but was apprehended by the vigilant team of detectives.

Upon her arrival in Kenya, en route to Mumbai, she was escorted to the immigration offices, where her luggage was retrieved from the baggage hall and taken to the Anti-Narcotics office.
Later, a thorough search of her body and luggage led to the discovery of narcotic drugs, 1,080 grams of cocaine hidden in various places, including her underwear.
Officers found a whitish substance wrapped in clear tape among her inner garments, as well as two slabs of Dove soap that concealed a suspicious powdery substance in her luggage.
