Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested four individuals who are allegedly part of a notorious gang known for stealing from locked vehicles.
In a statement made on July 24, the DCI revealed that the four suspects were arrested following a thorough investigation after the victim filed a report at the Langata police station.
The suspects, identified as Shaban Maingi Rashid, Steve Malvin Njagi, Johnson Muisyo Mbingu and Mashud Onyango Dax alias Sudi, were arrested after stealing Ksh 850,000 from a locked car in Langata on July 17, 2024.
“The arrest is a culmination of painstaking investigations arising from a report at Langata police station where a resident of South C- Green estate 2 lost part of his money that he had withdrawn from a local bank on July 17, 2024.” read the statement in part.
DCI while narrating the incident said that the victim, who had withdrawn the cash from a local bank, left the money inside his locked car during a brief stop at Uchumi supermarket in Langata to do some shopping.
Details of How the Robbery Happened
Upon returning, he discovered his vehicle had been broken into and the money, stashed in a khaki envelope, had vanished.
“It happened that the victim had left the money inside his locked motor vehicle and proceeded to shop at Uchumi supermarket in Langata only to return and find his vehicle having been broken into and all the money he had stashed in a Khaki envelope missing.”

DCI in their statement noted that Surveillance footage from a nearby business establishment proved crucial in cracking the case.
The obtained CCTV recordings showed the four suspects, traveling in a white Suzuki Swift with registration number KDB 771T, breaking into the victim’s car and making a swift getaway with the stolen cash.
“On reviewing CCTV footage from an adjacent business premise, it was established that the four-man gang onboard a white Suzuki Swift Reg. No. KDB 771T had been captured breaking into his car and taking off with his money.”
DCI Detectives Corner the Suspects
Following this discovery, detectives from the elite CRIB and Operations units sprang into action, launching a thorough investigation that culminated in the arrest of the suspects while they were aboard another Suzuki Swift, this time with registration number KDH 154B.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a master key and an additional set of number plates, KDP 989N, which matched the car’s insurance details.
“At the time of arrest, the four were onboard a Suzuki Swift Reg. No. KDH 154B but upon further search, the detectives recovered a master key and retrieved another set of number plates KDP 989N from inside the vehicle that also matched the vehicle’s insurance details.”
Further investigation revealed that one of the arrested individuals, Shaban Maingi Rashid, had a history of similar offenses in the Langata area and currently faces ongoing court cases.
