A Kenyan trader, Sumayya Mohamud Abdi, was robbed of Ksh 9.4 million (₹66.45 lakh) in a daylight heist in India’s Fort area, Mumbai, on January 27, 2026.
According to reports from the Indian news outlet Free Press Journal, the incident occurred while she was returning from the city’s wholesale garment markets.
Reportedly, the suspects intercepted her taxi near Alana Centre on Mahatma Gandhi Road, seized bags containing cash under the pretext of inspection, and fled on a motorcycle.
Sumayya Robbing Incident
The 26-year-old Nairobi resident, who deals in children’s garments, had arrived in Mumbai a day earlier and was staying at a hotel on Mohammed Ali Road.
On the day of the robbery, Sumayya visited the Mohammed Ali Road and Kalbadevi wholesale markets to settle supplier payments.
Her four associates handed over ₹58 lakh (KSh 8.2 million) in cash, and she carried an additional ₹8 lakh (KSh 1.14 million) of her own money in separate bags.
While returning to her hotel in Colaba by taxi along with an associate named Hoden, the cab was intercepted by two men riding a motorcycle near Alana Centre, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Fort.
One suspect, claiming to be a police officer, instructed the driver to step out for inspection. The second suspect approached the women, questioned them about their bags, and, under the pretext of verification, took possession of the cash-filled bags.
The duo then instructed the victims to report to the police station and fled.
“The cab was stopped, and the bags were taken under the pretext of inspection,” the police narrated.
“The victims realised they had been duped and raised an alarm at their hotel,” the authorities added.
