Police officers have explained the events that took place before and after the escape of Kevin Kang’ethe, the suspect who escaped from Muthaiga Police Station on Wednesday, February 7.
In an OB statement seen by The Kenya Times, two police officers who were manning the cells at the time said a man named John Maina Ndegwa arrived at the station at around 4.00pm and introduced himself as Kange’the’s lawyer.
As per the report, the lawyer requested to talk to the suspect who was under custody in the station.
The police, after their judgement, agreed to his request and presented Kang’ethe from the cells.
To facilitate the meeting, police officers took Kang’ethe to a room called the Anti-Crime Office no.3 and left him there.
It was from the room where the suspect escaped by running away, leaving his lawyer behind- according to the police.
“The officers agreed to his request and removed the prisoner from the cells and took him to the Anti-Crime Office no.3. The officers left him there with the lawyer,” the report read in part.
OCS was Holding Meeting
At the time, police noted, the station’s commander was holding a meeting with all anti-crime personnel and members of the inspectorate.
But the meeting was reportedly interrupted by a loud noise coming from officers who were chasing down the suspect who ran towards Thika Superhighway.

Their attempts to rearrest him, however, proved futile as the suspect managed to escape.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations then swung into action, launching investigations into the scene.
Police officers manning the station during the escape and the lawyer were among those arrested to allow investigations, according to the report.
Kenyans Question How Kevin Kang’ethe Escaped
The circumstances surrounding Kang’ethe’s escape have remain unclear to many, with some questioning how a wanted suspect managed to outwit entire police station.
Reacting to the news, CNN journalist Larry Madowo asked, “How did a murder suspect awaiting extradition to the US escape from a Kenyan police station?”

Others pointed towards a well-coordinated plan by the suspect, asserting that chances of escaping from custody as a suspect are rare.
Nairobi Police Commander Adamson had earlier on Thursday, February 8, confirmed the escape and assured that investigations were in top gear.
Until the time of his escape, Kevin Kang’ethe was waiting for his extradition to the United States where authorities intended to charge him with the murder of his girlfriend Margaret Mbitu.
Kang’ethe was arrested in late January at a restaurant in Parklands after a three-months long manhunt.
