Media personality Eric Omondi has addressed speculations about his political ambitions stating that his recent social activism activities are fueled by a desire to be elected.

In an interview with Betty Kyalo, Eric said that his actions with the Sisi kwa Sisi initiative are not aimed at winning approval to help him seek a political seat.

He however explained that the problems facing Kenyans are politically created, and therefore require political solutions.

“There’s a lot of political inclination to this because Kenya is a political Nation, all the problems that we have are politically created.”

Omondi cited the case of baby Pyden Mudonga, a one-month-old who had a cancerous growth in the jaw.

Despite raising over Ksh 600,000 for the baby’s surgery, Pyden sadly passed away.

Omondi emphasized that the baby’s death was a political issue, as someone in a position of responsibility failed to ensure the availability of necessary medical attention.

“That kid Pyden died in my hands so yes it’s political because someone somewhere did not take responsibility and to ensure that there’s medicine for that kid it must be a politician I’m 100% sure.”

He also highlighted the controversy surrounding the bread tax, stating that the tax is being used to renovate State House while the people continue to suffer.

“Right now, bread is being taxed so our very well abled president can renovate state house…it’s political, people will still suffer,” said Eric Omondi.

Eric Advocates for Youth in Parliament

Omondi clarified that his intention is not to pursue his political career but rather to encourage more young people to run for parliament.

“My intention is not even Eric Omondi, my intention is to get as many young people as possible into the parliament.”

He believes that a new generation is needed to solve the country’s problems and break the vicious cycle of political issues.

“Everybody who voted for example the finance bill we will do everything so that they don’t go back so it’s political in that nature because if we do not sort the politics of this nation, it will just be a vicious circle, we need a new generation.”

Eric Reveals How He Started His Activism Career

Eric also opened up about how he made the transition from being a renowned comedian to becoming a passionate social activist.

In the interview with Betty Kyalo, Omondi shared the pivotal moment that inspired his transformation.

After 16 years in the limelight, making people laugh and earning a living, Omondi realized he had never truly given back to society.

This realization struck him late last year when he acknowledged his lack of involvement in charitable causes, such as visiting children’s homes.

“I noticed late last year that I’ve never even visited a children’s home, I’ve never done anything for anyone it’s so shameful.”

Reflecting on his large platform as one of Kenya’s most followed personalities, Omondi knew he had the power to make a difference.

Motivated by the challenges Kenyans faced during the Finance Bill 2023/2024 period, when the prices of essential commodities skyrocketed, Omondi decided to use his voice and social media pages to advocate for those in need.

“So, I said I’ll use my voice and my pages to be the voice of the voiceless and to speak for those who cannot speak,” said Eric.

He began his activism journey with a demonstration outside Parliament, accompanied by a group of 35 bouncers to avoid potential arrests.

However, Omondi soon realized that demonstrations alone were not enough to create lasting change.

Eric launches Sisi Kwa Sisi

This led him to establish the “Sisi kwa Sisi” initiative, which translates to “Kenyans for Kenyans.”

Through this platform, Omondi and his team identify individual cases of Kenyans in dire need and rally support to assist them.

He revealed that in just seven months, the initiative has helped over 68 people and raised an impressive sum of 72 million shillings.

“We pick one case, one Kenyan who is in dire need and then we rally and so far, we have helped over 68 people and raised over 72 million in seven months,” he noted.
