Winfred Wanjiku, known by her stage name DJ Wiwa, is a DJ who has made a name for herself in the industry despite living with cerebral palsy.

Born and raised in Kirinyaga County, the 30-year-old DJ overcame numerous challenges to pursue her passion for music.

At a young age, Wanjiku was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a condition that affects her motor skills and has left her arms disabled.

However, this did not deter her from following her dreams. Encouraged by her mother, Wanjiku decided to take up deejaying, a decision that has since transformed her life.

“I consider my physical challenge a blessing in disguise, because I don’t think I would have been in this profession, were it not for my condition. Perhaps, I would be doing a less interesting job just to please others,” Wanjiku said in a past interview.

Unique Approach to Deejaying

Wanjiku’s unique approach to deejaying has captured the attention of many.

Unlike traditional DJs who use their hands to operate the equipment, Wanjiku uses her feet to spin the decks, a skill that has left audiences in awe.

“It is not just my prowess in spinning the deck that has got the attention of many, it is the fact that I am doing it with my feet.”

“I have had many people just come to see how I manage to spin with my legs, and many get inspired,” she said.

Overcoming Challenges to Become DJ Wiwa

Wanjiku’s journey to becoming a DJ was not an easy one.

After completing her studies in Tourism and Business, she faced numerous challenges in finding employment due to her condition.

Undeterred, she decided to pursue her passion for music and enrolled in a DJ school in 2018.

“At first, it wasn’t easy, having had to overcome my physical disability, especially in this profession.”

“Since I tossed myself into this career in 2018, I have faced the challenge of carrying my equipment to the shows,” she said.

Biggest Support system

Wanjiku’s mother was her biggest supporter, encouraging her to follow her dreams and providing the necessary resources for her to pursue her passion.

Sadly, she passed away in 2019, leaving a huge void in her life.

However, Wanjiku’s siblings and close friends have stepped up to become her support system, helping her navigate the challenges of the industry.

Despite the bottlenecks, Wanjiku has managed to make a name for herself in the industry.

She has attracted a loyal following, with repeat clients and new ones seeking her services regularly.

Her unique skills and infectious energy have earned her a reputation as a talented and versatile DJ.

“So many people tried to discourage me saying I can’t operate the turntables.”

“Others said deejays are immoral people but there’s nothing that gives me so much joy than proving them wrong and playing an entertaining set,” she said in a past interview.

Inspiring Others with Disabilities

Wanjiku’s success has not gone unnoticed, she has been featured in various media outlets, and her story has inspired many people living with disabilities to pursue their dreams.

Her determination and resilience have made her a role model for those facing similar challenges.

“I believe I have inspired many people to do things that they were once afraid of, and to me, this is a big achievement in life. This keeps me going,” she says.
