Kabare Girls High School is a public national boarding secondary school for girls located in Kirinyaga County. The school shares a rich and deeply rooted history tied to the early Anglican missionary efforts in Kenya.

Its foundation is credited to St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Kabare, which was established by European missionaries in 1910 as part of the broader work of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) — a movement that also inspired other historic institutions across East Africa.

A notable influence in the school’s formation is the late Archbishop David Gitari (1937–2013), a towering figure in the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), who championed holistic education and social justice.

Gitari’s vision mirrored that of Bishop Alfred Tucker, an early CMS leader who shaped the missiological and educational landscape of the region in the late 19th century.

The Kabare compound today hosts multiple historic institutions, including St. Andrew’s Girls Boarding Primary School, Kabare Boys’ Primary School, and Kabare Girls’ High School — all nestled on a shared and expansive campus that continues to shape lives through quality education.

Kabare Girls, alongside Baricho Boys’ High School, are the only two national schools in Kirinyaga County. The school was elevated to national status in recognition of its notable academic achievements and impressive infrastructural growth.

Notable alumni include Mary Muthoni Muriuki, the Principal Secretary (PS) of the State Department for Health and Professional Standards under the Ministry of Health in Kenya.

Kabare Girls High School performance

Until 2023, student admissions to Kabare Girls were based on the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam. This changed with the rollout of the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Kabare Girls has consistently cemented its place among Kenya’s academic elite. In the 2024 KCSE, the school presented 387 candidates, with over 90% attaining the minimum university entry grade required for full government sponsorship. It was ranked among the top 100 schools nationally.

The school registered impressive results, with 7 students attaining the coveted grade of A (plain). An additional 40 candidates scored an A-, while 75 achieved a B+.

The school also recorded 82 students with a B grade and 92 who earned a B-.

Further down the grade spectrum, 56 candidates obtained a C+, 22 scored a C, and 10 managed a C-. The lowest grade recorded was a D+, attained by three students.

The school posted an overall mean score of 8.615 in the 2024 KCSE, a slight dip from the 8.7645 mean recorded by its 2023 candidates.

School Fees

As per the Ministry of Education guidelines issued in 2020, national schools in Kenya were categorized into four clusters.

Kabare Girls falls under Cluster IV, with an official annual fee ceiling of approximately Ksh75,798 per student.

However, this fee may vary slightly depending on the school’s additional levies, which may cover school uniforms, motivational programs, co-curricular activities, and institutional development projects.

These costs are subject to approval by the Board of Management in accordance with ministry policies.
