A family from Baringo’s Kabargoge village mourns the loss of their 23-year-old daughter, Brigid Kandie, who mysteriously passed away three days after returning to Dublin, Ireland, following a brief visit to Kenya.

The young woman, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing, departed from Kenya eight months prior to embark on her educational journey.

Brigid arrived back in Kenya on January 27th, spending a week reconnecting with loved ones before heading back to Ireland.

Her family described her as upbeat upon arrival, enjoying time in Nairobi and Mombasa before reuniting with her parents in Kabarnet, Baringo Central.

Family Recalls Last Moments with Brigid

Brigid’s mother Sarah Kandie narrates that she returned to Nairobi on February 6th to board a flight bound for Dublin, Ireland escorted by her sisters and relatives.

She would later call her family, confirming her safe arrival. Two days later, Sarah says Brigid made another call revealing distressing details about an alleged altercation involving her boyfriend.

“My lastborn child called me at around 5.08pm, saying she needed to speak to her brother,” explained Brigid’s mother, Sarah Kandie.

“Something seemed amiss; my son started crying shortly afterwards. When I grabbed the phone, Brigid confided that she felt stressed but denied that it was not financially related. She mentioned that her boyfriend had locked her inside the house, despite needing to attend work,” she added.

Brigid’s mom also narrated that on the phone call, her daughter claimed her partner had attempted to stab her the previous day.

Despite expressing fear for her safety, Brigid assured her mother she could manage the situation independently.

“I informed her to call the authorities and she said she had already done so. I also advised her to inform the same student from Kabarnet, who was also living with her in the same city, but she claimed she would handle it,” narrated the mother.

Unfortunately, Brigid’s family did not hear from her again, learning of her passing two days later through contacts in Ireland.

Friends Mourn Brigid’s Death

Brigid, who studied at Kenya Medical Training College before pursuing further studies in Ireland, was described by her friends as a vibrant and loving individual.

Her social media posts, filled with images of her airport departure and reflections on happiness, now serve as poignant reminders of her zest for life.

Her last post on Instagram was on February 9 as she shared a picture at the airport.

“As we get older, we get better at choosing ways to make us happy. We do better in choosing activities that make us happy,” she captioned.

Friends took to online platforms to express their grief and condolences to her family.

“What is life? Go well, my friend,” one of her friends, Kipchirchir Collins mourned.

Family Speaks on Suicide Claims

A local media station visited the family’s home in Kaprogonya outside Kabarnet town, finding a somber atmosphere amidst memories of their beloved daughter’s recent visit and farewell.

Earlier reports had indicated that Brigid’s untimely death was attributed to suicide, supposedly stemming from a disagreement with her partner regarding their relationship.

However, the family dismissed claims that their daughter took her own life saying, “People have said a lot of things on social media, claiming she died of suicide. I am here to demystify that we have not received any information about suicide.”

“We are still waiting for the authorities to release the results, and we shall be travelling to Ireland to receive more information,” Brigid’s sister affirmed.

As investigations into Brigid’s death unfold, her family remains hopeful that answers will emerge, providing closure and peace during this difficult period.
