For Kenyan students relying on the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) to fund tuition and other educational expenses, ensuring that bank account information is accurate is crucial.

HELB disburses funds directly to the bank account listed on your profile, and incorrect or outdated details can delay payments or even result in failed transfers.

This article provides a step-by-step guide to updating your bank account details for HELB loan disbursement.

Step-by-Step Guide

Access Your HELB Account

Start by visiting the official HELB website at www.helb.co.ke.

Use your registered email address or username and password to log into your student account after making sure your login credentials are current and that you can access your profile securely.

After logging into your HELB student account, the next step is to locate your bank account information.

On the main dashboard, look for a tab labeled “Student Profile” or “My Account.” Within this area, there is a section titled “Bank Details” or “Payment Information.”

Clicking this section will display the bank account currently linked to your HELB loan disbursement.

Here, you can view all relevant details, such as the bank name, branch, account number, and account type.

This section is also where you will make edits if your account information has changed.

Update Your Account Information

Click “Edit” to change your bank information. You will be required to provide:

  • Bank name
  • Branch
  • Account number
  • Account type (current or savings)

It is essential that the account is active and that the account holder’s name matches the one on your HELB profile.

Any mismatch can result in failed loan disbursement.

After updating your information, you will typically be asked to verify the changes by uploading supporting documents, such as a bank statement or a passbook copy, showing your name and account number.

This verification ensures that HELB can safely and accurately transfer your loan to the correct account.

Upload Verification Documents

Once you have entered your new bank account details on the HELB portal, you will need to verify the information to ensure it is correct and legitimate. This step is crucial because HELB will not process any changes to your account without proof of ownership.

Prepare a clear, readable copy of any of the following documents:

  • A recent bank statement showing your full name and account number
  • A scanned page from your passbook with your name, account number, and branch
  • A bank confirmation letter stamped and signed by your bank

Make sure the document is official and valid, as HELB uses it to confirm that the account truly belongs to you.

Blurry or incomplete documents may be rejected, causing delays in processing your update.

To upload:

  1. Go to the Bank Details section where you edited your account information.
  2. Click “Upload Document” or the relevant prompt provided.
  3. Select the file from your computer or mobile device.
  4. Ensure the file is in an acceptable format, such as PDF or JPEG.
  5. Double-check that the uploaded document is clear and fully visible.

Once uploaded, save the changes to submit your verification for review.

HELB will then assess your request and confirm whether your new bank account is approved for loan disbursement.

Confirm and Save Changes

After entering your new bank account information and uploading the required verification documents, the next step is to review and finalize your update.

This step is crucial to ensure that your loan will be disbursed correctly.

  • Review Your Details Carefully: Check that your bank name, branch, account number, and account type are all accurate. Even a single incorrect digit in your account number can prevent HELB from depositing your loan.
  • Verify Document Uploads: Ensure that all uploaded documents are clear, complete, and properly linked to your profile. Documents must clearly show your name and account number.
  • Submit the Update: Once you are confident that all details are correct, click the “Save” or “Submit” button on the portal. This action formally submits your changes for HELB’s processing.
  • Wait for Confirmation: HELB typically sends a confirmation notification via email or SMS within 24 to 48 hours, indicating that your new bank account has been successfully registered for loan disbursement.

Follow Up if Needed

HELB typically reviews updates within 24 to 48 hours, but delays can occasionally occur due to high traffic on the portal or verification issues.

If you do not receive a confirmation notification within two days, or if your loan disbursement date is approaching, take the following steps:

  1. Check Your Email and SMS: HELB often sends confirmation messages once the bank account update is approved. Ensure that messages are not filtered into your spam folder.
  2. Contact HELB Customer Service:
    • Phone: +254 709 957 000
    • Email: [email protected]
When contacting HELB, provide your full name, ID/Registration number, and a brief explanation of your issue to help the support team quickly locate your profile.
  3. Verify Through the Portal: Log back into your HELB account to check if the updated bank details are now reflected under the Bank Details section.

Following up ensures that your funds will be disbursed to the correct account on time. It also prevents last-minute complications, especially if tuition or school fees deadlines are approaching.

Keep Your Details Updated in the Future

Maintaining accurate and up-to-date bank account information in your HELB profile is essential for uninterrupted loan disbursement.
