How Much Do School Principals Earn in Kenya? TSC Salaries, Job Groups and Allowances Breakdown

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) unveiled revised salaries and allowances for teachers following the signing of the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

According to a circular dated July 31, 2025, Kenyan teachers started receiving the revised salaries as of July 1, 2025.

According to the TSC circular, principals are categorized into several levels based on their job titles, grades, and T-Scales:

  • Chief Principal: Grade D5, T-Scale 15.
  • Senior Principal: Grade D4, T-Scale 14.
  • Principal: Grade D3, T-Scale 13.
  • Deputy Principal I: Grade D3, T-Scale 13.
  • Deputy Principal II: Grade D2, T-Scale 12.
  • Deputy Principal III: Grade D1, T-Scale 11

How Much TSC Principals Earn in Kenya Per Job Grade

According to the circular, Deputy Headteachers II and Senior Masters IV (Grade C4) are earning salaries ranging from KSh58,600 to KSh77,100.

Headteachers and Deputy Headteachers I (Grade C5) are earning between KSh69,700 and KSh96,100, reflecting salary increments of KSh7,473 to KSh16,479.

Meanwhile, Senior Headteachers and Deputy Principals III (Grade D1) earn between KSh81,000 and KSh99,300, while Deputy Principals II and Senior Masters I (Grade D2) earn between KSh95,300 and KSh116,000.

The circular further shows that Principals and Deputy Principals I (Grade D3) earn between KSh109,200 and KSh133,300, while Senior Principals (Grade D4) earn between KSh121,800 and KSh150,700.

At the top of the teaching hierarchy, Chief Principals (Grade D5) are earning between KSh135,300 and KSh167,400 following the latest salary adjustments.

Hefty Allowances Principals Receive

In addition to their basic salaries, Chief Principals, Senior Principals and Principals are entitled to these allowances, with house allowance varying depending on their duty station.

The allowances include a baggage allowance for transfers, a hardship allowance for those stationed in challenging environments, a disability guide allowance for teachers living with disabilities, and an annual leave allowance paid every January.
