Kenyatta University has confirmed the appointment of Professor John Okumu as the new Substantive Vice-Chancellor.
In a statement dated July 27, the University Council congratulated Professor John Okumu on his appointment as the Vice-Chancellor.
“Kenyatta University warmly Congratulates Prof. John Okumu on his appointment as the Substantive Vice-Chancellor of Kenyatta University. We celebrate this well-deserved milestone and wish him wisdom, strength, and success as he leads our University towards greater excellence, innovation, and global impact,” the message read.
The appointment ends his six-month tenure in an acting capacity and more than three decades at the institution, where he has served as an academic, researcher, administrator, and leader in various capacities.
Okumu’s journey at Kenyatta University began as a student in the 1983 before he later rose through the ranks to become one of the institution’s senior academics.
Academic Journey from Physics Student to Professor
Okumu was born and raised in Kenya and began his higher education journey at Kenyatta University in 1983, where he enrolled for a Bachelor of Education (Science) degree.

He specialized in Physics, Mathematics, and Education, graduating in 1986. His interest in physics led him to continue his studies at the same university, enrolling for a Master of Science degree in Condensed Matter Physics in 1986.
He completed the master’s programme in 1988, gaining deeper knowledge in the study of the physical properties of materials and their structures.
Seeking to advance his expertise, Okumu later joined the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom in 1992 for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Condensed Matter Physics.
He completed the programme in 1996, building advanced research skills in condensed matter theory and scientific investigation.
Professor John Okumu Career Background
Prof. Okumu began his professional career at Kenyatta University in 1988 as a Tutorial Fellow, shortly after completing his master’s degree.
He was promoted to Lecturer in 1992, the same year he began his PhD studies, before rising to the position of Senior Lecturer in 1999.
In 2004, he became an Associate Professor, and in 2020, he attained the rank of full Professor of Physics.
Throughout his academic career, Prof. Okumu has been involved in teaching, supervising postgraduate students, and conducting research, and his work has been published in several academic journals.
Beyond classroom responsibilities, he has also mentored students and supported research development at the university.
His experience in academic leadership began early, with him serving as Acting Dean of the School of Pure and Applied Sciences on several occasions, including in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2010.

In these roles, he was involved in coordinating academic programmes, faculty operations, and administrative activities within the school.
Before his appointment as Vice-Chancellor, Okumu held several administrative positions in managing university affairs.
Between 2003 and 2004, he served as Deputy Director of Self-Sponsored Programmes, where he participated in initiatives aimed at expanding access to university education.
He also contributed to academic publishing in the region. From 2004 to 2007, he served as Deputy Editor of the East African Journal of Science before becoming Editor-in-Chief of the East African Journal of Physical Sciences between 2007 and 2010.
In 2010, he was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) at Kenyatta University, a position he held for a decade.
During his tenure as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, he oversaw key academic functions, including curriculum development, academic policies, research coordination, and quality assurance.
