Candidates sitting the 2026 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations may face uncertainty if they fall ill during an exam and cannot continue.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has rules for recording candidates who miss examination papers. However, the available guidelines do not guarantee that a candidate who falls sick during an examination will be allowed to sit a replacement paper.

The main KCSE written examinations are scheduled to begin on Monday, November 2, with English Paper 1 in the morning and Chemistry Paper 1 in the afternoon.

The examination period is scheduled to end on Friday, November 20, with Physics Paper 3, a practical examination.

What Should a Candidate Do if They Fall Sick During an Exam?

If a candidate starts feeling unwell during an examination, they should alert the invigilator immediately.

If the illness requires medical attention, the candidate should follow the instructions of the examination officials and seek appropriate care. The school administration should also be informed about the incident.

Where applicable, the candidate or their parent should retain medical records and other documents that explain the circumstances.

However, candidates should not assume that reporting an illness or obtaining a medical certificate automatically gives them permission to complete the paper later. Any further examination arrangements must follow the applicable KNEC rules.

What Happens if Illness Forces a Candidate to Miss a KCSE  Paper?

KNEC’s examination results guidelines state that a candidate is declared absent if they do not sit one or all papers in the examination.

The council uses the symbol X to indicate absence in examination results.

Missing one paper does not automatically mean a candidate’s overall mean grade will be X. KNEC states that the overall mean grade is recorded as X only when a candidate is absent from all subjects.

Candidates who cannot complete or sit a paper because of illness should inform their school administration, which can then seek clarification from the relevant examination officials on how to handle the case.

The KCSE guidance reviewed does not establish a general right for candidates who fall sick during an examination to sit a replacement paper during the same examination series.

What if a Candidate Has an Infectious Disease?

KNEC’s examination regulations specifically provide for candidates exposed to infectious diseases and placed in quarantine.

The regulations state that such candidates may sit their examinations at a quarantine facility, provided the school principal informs KNEC in advance through the Sub-County Director of Education.

This provision applies to the circumstances described in the regulations, and it does not mean that every candidate who falls sick during an examination automatically qualifies to sit the paper at another venue.

Can a Candidate Sit the Missed Paper Later?

KNEC has previously organised separate KCSE examination series that included eligible candidates who registered but could not sit the examination because of unforeseen circumstances, including sickness.

However, a separate examination series is not the same as an automatic arrangement to repeat a paper missed during the regular KCSE examination period.

Candidates and parents should therefore consult the school administration and KNEC to establish what options, if any, apply to their circumstances.

Parents should contact the school if a candidate becomes too ill to continue with or attend an examination, and document the circumstances.

Candidates should also follow the official examination timetable and instructions. KNEC’s 2026 timetable states that no additional time should be allowed beyond the paper’s prescribed duration.

Falling sick during an examination does not guarantee a replacement paper; candidates should alert the invigilator, seek medical attention where necessary, and ensure the school is informed so the circumstances can be addressed.
