Candidates sitting the 2026 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations risk being recorded as absent if they fail to sit one or more examination papers, according to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
The council’s examination results guidelines explain how candidates who miss papers are recorded and how absence is reflected in their results.
In its official guidance, KNEC states: “A candidate is declared absent if he/she did not sit for one or all papers in the examination.”
The rule makes it important for KCSE candidates to attend every paper listed on their examination timetables.
Those who miss an examination should report the circumstances to their school administration as soon as possible.
What Happens if KCSE Candidates Miss One Paper?
KNEC uses the symbol X to indicate absence in examination results.
However, missing one paper does not automatically mean that a candidate’s overall mean grade will be X.
The council’s guidance states that the overall mean grade is X when a candidate is absent in all subjects.
“Mean grade will be X, if a candidate is absent in all subjects,” KNEC says.
Candidates who miss a paper should contact their school administration to establish how their absence should be reported and whether any further action is required.

Candidates Who Miss an Examination Because of Illness
Candidates who become ill or experience an emergency that prevents them from sitting an examination should inform their school administration immediately.
They should also retain relevant supporting documents, including medical records where applicable, and submit them to the school.
Also to note, a candidates should not assume that a medical certificate automatically entitles him/her to sit a replacement paper.
They should seek clarification from their school and KNEC on whether any special consideration applies to their circumstances.

Missing a paper versus examination malpractice
KNEC distinguishes candidates who miss examination papers from those whose results are cancelled because of examination irregularities.
The council’s results guidance uses the symbol Y to indicate a cancelled subject.
“Mean grade will be Y, if one or more subjects are cancelled,” it states.
As the KCSE exams begin, candidates should tcheck their examination timetables, confirm the dates and starting times of their papers, and arrive at their examination centres early.
Those who encounter an emergency should notify their school administration promptly and follow the instructions given by the relevant examination officials.
Candidates and parents can consult KNEC’s official Release of Examination Results page for further guidance on examination results.
The main KCSE written exams will begin on Monday, November 2, with English Paper 1 in the morning and Chemistry Paper 1 in the afternoon.
The examination period will end on Friday, November 20, when candidates will sit Physics Paper 3, a practical examination
