Choosing what to wear for a day outdoors in Nairobi means balancing comfort, personal style, and changing weather.

From park visits, sports events and nature walks to outdoor lunches and city outings, breathable clothing and light layers can help people stay comfortable throughout the day.

In a style guide, Kenyan fashion brand Safari by Vivo recommended breathable fabrics, relaxed silhouettes and lightweight layers to accommodate Nairobi’s changing weather.

The Kenya Meteorological Services Authority (KMSA) outlines Nairobi’s seasonal weather patterns, which can help people choose suitable clothing throughout the year.

The long rains, which run from March to May, bring heavy afternoon showers, temperatures of about 12°C to 22°C, and muddy outdoor conditions. A waterproof jacket, quick-drying clothes, and closed shoes can help you stay comfortable.

June to August, come with cold conditions with nighttime temperatures sometimes dropping to around 10°C. It’s wise to carry a warm jacket or light sweater, especially in early mornings and evenings when temperatures are lower.

The short rains arrive between October and November, bringing occasional showers that may affect outdoor plans. A compact umbrella and a lightweight waterproof jacket can help you prepare for sudden changes in the weather.

From December to February, Nairobi is warmer and sunnier, with daytime temperatures reaching about 26°C. Lightweight, breathable clothing suits daytime activities, while a cardigan or light jacket adds warmth on cooler evenings.

Choose Light and Breathable Clothing

Safari by Vivo recommended airy wrap tops, flowy skirts, and sleeveless maxi dresses for comfort and ease of movement during everyday activities.

The brand also highlighted tailored trousers, versatile two-piece sets, and other wardrobe staples you can style for different occasions.

For a casual outing, a cotton T-shirt paired with jeans, chinos, a skirt or lightweight trousers offers a practical option. Loose-fitting clothing can also make walking and spending several hours outdoors more comfortable.

Neutral colours such as white, beige, black and navy are easy to coordinate, while brighter colours and prints offer alternatives for those who prefer a more expressive style.

Sports Wear

According to ELLE’s guide to football game outfits, team-inspired clothing can be part of a game-day look. A team jersey paired with jeans, shorts or a skirt offers a simple option for football fans.

Supporters can also incorporate their team’s colours without wearing a full kit.

For a more relaxed look, a T-shirt, denim trousers and comfortable sneakers can work well for outdoor sporting events.

Who What Wear’s football outfit guide features combinations of vintage T-shirts, denim, and windbreakers, offering inspiration for spectators who want to look stylish while keeping it casual.

Footwear should match the planned activity. Sneakers or walking shoes suit city strolls, park visits, and longer walks, while supportive sandals work for relaxed outings on even surfaces.

Prepare for Sun and Changing Weather

Safari by Vivo’s style guide recommends lightweight layers, including a kimono, shirt jacket or light coat, to accommodate cooler mornings and warmer periods during the day.

A cap or wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen can help protect you from sun exposure. Carrying a compact umbrella during rainy periods may also be useful.

A small backpack or crossbody bag can hold essentials such as drinking water, sunscreen, a phone and an extra layer.
