Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery traditionally stands out as one of the most sought-after degree programmes by top Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) performers.
However, the course is one of the most expensive degree programs under the new university funding model, with the cost varying across institutions.

This six-year degree program is designed to prepare medical doctors who are well-grounded in knowledge, competencies, and skills in humanities, social sciences, and medical sciences.
Students are trained to manage health problems and related issues at different levels of health systems, using collaborative, innovative, and strategic approaches that enhance the well-being of individuals and communities.

Additionally, students are exposed to current technologies and improved teaching methods that facilitate the consolidation of knowledge, critical thinking, and research, enabling them to practice evidence-based medicine.
Requirements to Study Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery
Candidates seeking to study Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery must meet the common requirements for entry into university, which is a C+ (plus) mean grade in KCSE.

Furthermore, KCSE applicants must have at least a B (plain) in the four cluster subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics/Mathematics, and English/Kiswahili.
Alternatively, applicants should be holders of Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) or equivalent qualifications with at least two principle passes—one in Biology and Chemistry—and one subsidiary pass in either Mathematics or Physics.
Additionally, they must have a credit pass in English.

Students with Diploma Also Qualify
Depending on the institution, other candidates may qualify with at least a C plain in KCSE and a diploma with at least a credit from a recognized institution in Medical/Health Sciences.
These include Environmental Health, Environmental Studies, Water and Civil Engineering, Pharmacy, Nursing, Clinical Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Public Health, Community Health, Nutrition, or any other health-related courses.
Applicants can also be an undergraduate degree in Biological/ Clinical Sciences or related qualifications from a recognized University.
Those who had a C- (minus)at KCSE and progressed from certificate to any of the above Diploma at any recognized/accredited institutions also qualify.
Upon completion of the programme, graduates will be required to undertake one year of medical internship before they can be licensed by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) to practice in Kenya.
