The idea to establish a university dates back to the early 1960s when the Njuri Ncheke, the council of elders of the Meru people, proposed creating an institution for higher education to train youth in technical fields. MECOTECH was established as one of several institutions suggested by the government to address local and national development needs.
MUST has since played a significant role in expanding higher education and research opportunities. The university has made commendable progress in various areas, including curriculum development, staff capacity, student enrollment, and infrastructure.
