Moi Girls High School, Eldoret, stands proudly among Kenya’s top national girls’ secondary schools, with a rich legacy that dates back nearly a century.
Its origins trace to 1928, when it was established as Highlands Primary School — a European institution built to serve the children of white settlers in the region then known as the White Highlands.

Throughout the 1930s, the school evolved, relocating across the Sosiani River to what is now Hill School, and even made early attempts to launch a teacher training college.
But it wasn’t until 1954 that the current institution was established under the name New Girls’ High School, reflecting the pressing need for a girls’ secondary school for white settler families.

The 1950s and 1960s saw the school flourish in academics and sports, laying the foundation for a legacy of excellence that continues to this day.
With Kenya’s independence in 1963 and subsequent self-rule in 1964, the demographics of the school began to shift as many settlers departed the country.

Moi Girls High School Eldoret history
That same year, then Vice President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi became chairman of the school’s board. His leadership proved instrumental in guiding the institution through this period of profound change.
In 1978, as Moi rose to become the President of Kenya, the school was renamed Moi Girls High School – Eldoret in his honor.
Under his long-standing chairmanship, which extended until 2007 when he retired, the school continued to thrive, upholding its reputation for academic rigor, discipline, and sporting excellence.
The institution, now firmly rooted in its legacy, continues to honor the ideals of its founding years while embracing diversity, academic excellence, and a commitment to shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
Each year, about 400 students are admitted based on academic merit and choice, in line with Kenya’s education policy.
The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam was used to determine eligibility until 2023, when it was replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
The school has maintained a stellar academic record, consistently ranking among Kenya’s top 10 secondary schools in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

32 students scored a straight A, while 100 scored an A-. Additionally, 135 students attained a B+, 94 scored a B, while 34 managed a B-.
The school’s impressive performance saw the 2024 candidates achieve a mean score of 9.75.
School Fees
The government previously issued a directive outlining the maximum annual school fees that parents should pay.
Under new guidelines introduced in 2020 by the Ministry of Education, Kenya’s 103 national schools were grouped into four clusters.
Moi Girls was placed in Cluster Three (III), meaning the official annual fee cap for students is approximately Ksh75,798.
However, actual fees may vary slightly from school to school due to additional charges levied by individual institutions—such as for uniforms, motivation programs, or co-curricular activities.
