Nembu Girls High School is a public girls’ boarding secondary school located in Waithaka, Dagoretti Sub‑County in Nairobi County.
The school is approximately 20 kilometres from Nairobi’s Central Business District, along Kikuyu Road, and operates as an Extra‑County C2 Senior School under the Competency‑Based Education framework.
Historical background and Academics
Nembu Girls High School was established in 1982 as a mixed day Harambee school created through a community initiative in Dagoretti.
The project emerged in response to a shortage of secondary school places in the locality, where learners struggled to secure slots in neighbouring institutions such as Lenana, Mutuini, Dagoretti, and Precious Blood.
The community’s goal was to provide a local secondary school to accommodate students unable to find placement elsewhere.
Following its establishment, the school underwent structural changes that converted it from a mixed-day setup into a girls’ boarding school.
As education reforms evolved nationally, Nembu Girls adapted to Kenya’s transition toward the Competency‑Based Curriculum and was reclassified as a Senior School offering Grades 10, 11, and 12 under the Competency‑Based Education (CBE) framework.
The school provides approved subject combinations across several pathways, including:
- STEM Pathway
Covers science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines, designed for learners pursuing scientific and technical competencies aligned with national curriculum standards. - Social Sciences Pathway
Includes humanities and business studies, providing academic grounding for learners interested in social studies, economic studies, and civic‑oriented disciplines. - Arts and Sports Pathway
Supports performing arts, visual art,s and physical education, offering skills-based progression in creative and athletic fields.
