Pumwani Boys High School, a boys-only boarding secondary institution, began as an extra-county public school in Starehe Sub-County, Nairobi County, Kenya.
Pumwani Boys High School has evolved from an ordinary secondary institution into a C2 public boys’ boarding senior school under Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
It transitioned to host Grades 10–12 and began preparations for 2026 admissions.
Operating under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), the school serves boys-only students transitioning into senior secondary pathways, like:
- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
- Social Sciences (Humanities and Business Studies)
- Arts & Sports (Performing/Visual Arts and Physical Education)
Historical Background
Pumwani Boys traces its roots to the Pumwani Government African School, one of the earliest government-established educational institutions for Africans in Nairobi during the colonial period.
It was founded in 1958, marking a significant shift in colonial education policy by providing post-primary schooling within Nairobi’s African communities at a time when most secondary schools were mission-run and located outside the city.
After independence in 1963, the institution expanded its curriculum and stature, eventually becoming known as Pumwani Boys Secondary School and, in its current evolution under CBC, Pumwani Boys Senior School.
Its performance in national examinations, particularly the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) under the previous 8-4-4 system, has been solid, with students achieving a range of grades that support progression to tertiary study and vocational pathways.
The school is led by Principal Mwangi R. Mugo, who oversees both academic and administrative functions.

Extracurricular Activities and Sports Achievements
Beyond academics, Pumwani Boys High School focuses on holistic development through a variety of extracurricular clubs and notable sports milestones.
Through a partnership with the Harmony Kenya Foundation, the school has received new brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments.
Additional tutors have been provided, enabling students to perform alongside students from other schools in community concerts.
While formal school teams are still emerging, Pumwani’s community-based sports outfit, Pumwani Sports Club, has made headlines, most notably by winning the prestigious Koth-Biro football tournament.
This victory was significant, ending a 46-year title drought and signaling the athletic potential within the school’s environs.
