Nyandarua High School is a national mixed boarding secondary school located in Nyandarua County.
The school was officially established on 29th March 1965, at a time when Kenya had just gained independence and there was a high demand for secondary and university education.
The first group of 71 students began their learning in a house located below Rurii Shopping Centre, close to the main road. In 1967, the school introduced a girls’ stream to accommodate female learners. However, due to limited space, the girls were temporarily moved to Karogo-ini until facilities on the main campus were ready.
In 1968, the International Development Agency (IDA) launched a major construction project on the current school site. This marked a major step forward in the school’s physical and institutional development.
By 1970, an A-Level science class was introduced, allowing students to pursue advanced studies in scientific fields. In 1974, the school installed a water borehole and a single-phase electricity supply, providing vital infrastructure for learning and day-to-day operations.

In 1978, an A-Level arts class was also introduced, complementing the existing science stream. This allowed the school to expand to triple streams from Form 1 to Form 6.
The first cohort under Kenya’s newly adopted 8-4-4 education system sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination in 1989, replacing the previous system.
Since then, the institution has been admitting candidates who sat the national high school entrance examination, the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

The last KCPE was, however, administered in 2023 after it was replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) under the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC).
During the school’s Silver Jubilee in 1990, the Nyandarua School Old Students Association (NSOSA) made a major contribution by donating a library block.
This facility was referred to as the “HEART” of the school and housed over 60,000 volumes of books, significantly expanding the school’s learning resources. The initiative was supported by parents and the surrounding community.
Today, the school sits on a 54-acre parcel of land and serves a student population of over 767 students.
The school has, over the years, continued to record impressive performances in the KCSE national examinations, featuring among the top 500 countrywide.
School Fees
The government has previously issued a directive to all institutions regarding the total fees parents should pay per year.
As per the Ministry of Education guidelines issued in 2020, national schools in Kenya were categorized into four clusters.
Nyandarua High falls under Cluster Two (II), with an official annual fee ceiling of approximately Ksh75,798 per student.
However, this fee may vary slightly depending on the school’s additional levies, which may cover school uniforms, motivational programs, co-curricular activities, and institutional development projects.
These costs are subject to approval by the Board of Management in accordance with ministry policies.
