Universities like Rongo University, Kibabii University, Nairobi University, Multimedia University, and Maseno University are well equipped with journalism facilities, including a digital studio lab, cameras, and lighting equipment, offering practical sessions for the students.

To complete a degree in journalism and media-related fields, most public universities require 4 years, with 2 semesters per year and a long holiday.
At private institutions like Mount Kenya University, students complete their courses in two and a half years and don’t have long holidays.
Institutions like Rongo University, Maseno University, Kisii University, and Kibabii University allow their students to undertake industrial attachment in their third year, while others, like Masinde Muliro, allow their students to undertake their attachment in their fourth year.
Qualifications for Journalism, Media, and Communication Courses in Kenya
To qualify for a bachelor’s degree in journalism and media-related studies, a student must meet any one of the following requirements:
- Minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ (Plus)
- At least a C+ in English or Kiswahili
Some universities may accept a C (Plain) in English/Kiswahili, provided the overall mean grade is C+.
For self-sponsored students, they can apply directly to the schools, and for the government sponsored students, they can apply through the KUCCPS portal once it’s open for application.
