Russia has lost 780 troops in the past 24 hours in the ongoing war in Ukraine, according to figures released on March 12, 2026, by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The latest battlefield update shows that Russian forces also lost three tanks and 20 armoured fighting vehicles during the same period.
Ukraine’s military further reported the destruction of 56 artillery systems, one multiple launch rocket system, and one air defence system.
In addition, Russian forces lost 243 vehicles and fuel tanks, along with 2,102 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the past day.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Russia has lost more than 1.27 million troops, according to Ukrainian estimates.
Ukraine Gains Ground, Russia Struggles to Replace Frontline Losses
In an update on March 3, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that Ukraine has recaptured 460 sq km (117.6 sq miles) of territory, which is about 10 percent of the land lost to Moscow in 2025.
He attributed the gains to Moscow’s inability to replace front-line losses, noting that Moscow is reportedly losing up to 35,000 personnel each month.
“Because of these losses, the Russian army is no longer expanding. The number of casualties matches the number of newly mobilized soldiers. They are approaching a crisis,” Zelenskyy told the Italian daily.
A US think tank, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), provided a slightly lower estimate, reporting that Ukraine had regained around 257 sq km (100 sq miles).

Further, Ukraine has achieved notable success in the eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, where Russian forces had maintained only a limited presence and are now confined to just three towns.
Ukrainian military official Major General Oleksandr Komarenko reported that nearly the entire region has been reclaimed.
In the adjacent Zaporizhzhia region, where Russian troops had previously occupied nearly three-quarters of the territory and were advancing toward the regional capital, Ukrainian forces have retaken nine towns since January.

Russia Maintains It is Winning the War
On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin has asserted that Moscow’s forces have made further gains in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region.
According to Putin, Ukrainian control of the area has fallen from around 25 percent six months ago to between 15 and 17 percent.
Meanwhile, Kremlin Foreign Policy Adviser Yuri Ushakov said that Putin informed U.S. President Donald Trump that Moscow’s troops are “advancing rather successfully” in Ukraine.
