The Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs and Sports, Salim Mvurya, has announced a review of the athlete support framework that will see athletes receive millions as rewards.
In a statement on July 8, 2025, CS Salim Mvurya said the review aims to boost athletes’ performance and motivation.
“Our athletes continue to elevate Kenya’s global profile through unmatched excellence. As a government, we are not just clapping for them, we are investing in them,” said CS.
This announcement comes as athletes prepare for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Reward Package Kenyan Athletes Will Receive
The new package features increased financial rewards, improved access to modern training facilities, enhanced wellness and mental health support, and more efficient logistics for international competitions.
Additionally, he also noted that the move was backed by the recently reviewed National Sports Policy and approved by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) in April 2025.
The Government will allocate Ksh 70 million in compensation to performing athletes who were overlooked or not formally recognized in past competitions.

Under the new guidelines, gold medalists at the Olympic and Paralympic Games will receive Ksh 3 million, up from the previous Ksh 750,000. Silver medalists will now be awarded Ksh 2 million, a significant increase from Ksh 500,000, while bronze medalists will earn Ksh 1 million, up from the earlier Ksh 350,000.
For the Commonwealth Games, gold medal winners will now receive Ksh 2.5 million, a substantial rise from Ksh 500,000. Silver medalists will earn Ksh 1.5 million, up from Ksh 300,000, and bronze medalists will receive Ksh 1 million, up from Ksh 200,000.

Why the Athlete’s Package was Reviewed
He added that the move is both a corrective and symbolic gesture that signals a new era of fairness, inclusivity, and respect for the men and women who have flown Kenya’s flag high, regardless of the era in which they competed.
“This is about justice, dignity, and acknowledging the sacrifices and victories of every Kenyan athlete,” the statement read.
According to the CS, the revised reward scheme shall reflect the Government’s commitment to compensate athletes for their achievements and sacrifices fairly.
Aiming at raising morale, match international standards, and ensure that sports is treated as a respected and rewarding career path for Kenya’s top performers.
Moreover, the Ministry pledged that the enhanced packages will not only reward current athletes but also support the growth of emerging and future talent.
“I want to thank Athletics Kenya for the continued seamless cooperation and coordination with the Ministry and reaffirm our support as we continue to invest in our athletes,” CS concluded
