Forward Travellers SACCO Ltd is a transport-based cooperative society established in 2010 that provides transport management, savings, lending, agency banking, vehicle maintenance, insurance, legal and other member support services.

The SACCO is headquartered along Spine Road in Kayole, Nairobi, and positions itself as an organization focused on empowering PSV owners and other members through financial services, operational management and innovation.

According to information published by the SACCO, it has 3,000 members, has offered 5,000 loans and has won 25 awards.

The organization states that its mission is to empower PSV owners and other members through sustainable financial services, efficient management and innovative solutions that drive personal and community growth.

Its vision is to become the leading transport-based SACCO in Kenya recognized for excellence, integrity and member empowerment.

The SACCO’s core values are integrity, accountability, teamwork, innovation and member-centred service.

History, Ownership and Leadership

Forward Travellers SACCO Ltd was established in 2010 as a member-owned cooperative society.

Membership is open to employees, groups and individuals who meet the SACCO’s eligibility requirements.

To join, applicants are required to complete a membership application form, submit a copy of their national identification document, provide a passport-sized photograph and pay registration and minimum share capital fees.

The SACCO operates under a cooperative model in which members save, invest and access services through the organization.

The leadership team comprises:

The organization has departments responsible for Administration, Operations, Legal Affairs, Insurance, ICT and AutoShop Services.

Forward Travellers Routes and Transport Operations

Forward Travellers SACCO is a major operator within Nairobi’s eastern transport corridor.

Forward Travellers SACCO operates across key Nairobi commuter corridors serving Kayole, Dandora, Gikomba, Eastleigh, Malaa, Mihango, Cabanas and areas along the Eastern Bypass.

The SACCO is also associated with Route 19/60 and Route 17A operations.

In addition, it has participated in electric mobility initiatives through electric buses operating along the Kayole, Kayole Junction, Jogoo Road and Nairobi CBD corridor.

The SACCO coordinates and manages member-owned public service vehicles, providing operational management and transport support services.

BOSA and Financial Services

Forward Travellers SACCO operates a Back Office Service Activity (BOSA) division that manages non-withdrawable savings and loan services.

Active members with regular savings contributions can save through the platform and borrow against their accumulated savings.

The SACCO’s Normal Loan attracts interest of 1 per cent per month on a reducing balance and has a maximum repayment period of 48 months.

Applicants must have been active members for at least six months. Loan amounts depend on a member’s savings and repayment capacity, and all facilities must be guaranteed by at least two active members.

The Emergency Loan attracts interest of 1.16 per cent on a reducing balance, has a maximum repayment period of eight months and offers up to Ksh200,000.

Applicants must be active contributing members and meet the SACCO’s lending requirements.

The School Fees Loan attracts interest of 1.16 per cent per month on a reducing balance, has a maximum repayment period of eight months and offers up to Ksh200,000.

Applicants must have been members for at least six months and provide a school fees structure or invoice.

In addition to savings and lending, the SACCO provides M-Pesa and bank agency services, savings plans, investment opportunities and financial management support.

Members can borrow up to three times their savings subject to repayment capacity and guarantor requirements.

Loan processing takes between two and five working days depending on the product and documentation provided.

AutoShop Services

The SACCO operates an AutoShop that provides vehicle maintenance, repair and spare-parts services.

The division offers engine diagnostics, brake repairs, suspension repairs, oil changes, routine servicing, major repairs and preventive maintenance.

Members can purchase engine oils, lubricants, brake linings, brake pads, leaf springs, shock absorbers, filters, batteries, belts, body components and lighting components through the facility.

The AutoShop also provides wheel alignment, brake inspections and vehicle checks.

Members operating multiple vehicles can access fleet support services, bulk maintenance packages, priority servicing and scheduled maintenance programmes.
