Mukuru Slums Woman Humiliated by Pastor Ng’ang’a to Become Homeowner

A woman who made headlines after local televangelist Pastor Ng’ang’a dismissed her when she sought assistance for rent is now set for a fresh start. Milka Moraa Tegisi, a hopeful lady from the Mukuru kwa Njenga slums, is set to represent the transformative power of the government of Kenya’s Affordable Housing Program.

For years, Moraa and her family have lived under deplorable conditions, struggling with inadequate shelter, lack of basic amenities, and insecurity.

Just weeks ago, Moraa’s rented single room which she paid Ksh4,000 monthly was locked over 2-month rent arrears.

Her recent attempt to get help in raising the rent left her humiliated as Pastor Ng’ang’a, whom she had turned to in a church service, dismissed her request telling her to instead turn to the government for affordable housing.

While this experience was painful, it turned out to be a turning point. The government has taken up the challenge and is now walking with her on a journey that will change her life forever.

Moraa is on the cusp of a life-changing opportunity with the chance to own a home in the Mukuru Social housing project in Nairobi County.

For many people like Moraa living in informal settlements, life has been a constant battle.

Struggle and transformation

The lack of proper sanitation, clean water, and secure housing has exposed them to daily health risks, constant displacement, and emotional and physical distress.

Families are often forced to use makeshift homes, leaving them vulnerable to flooding, fire outbreaks, and other hazards.

The lack of safe, stable shelter is not just a matter of inconvenience but also a barrier to dignity, security, and a better future.

Moraa’s story is one of hope and opportunity, made possible by the Affordable Housing Program, which aims to provide decent, affordable, and secure housing for Kenyans.

The government has set out to build thousands of affordable units across the country, with Mukuru Met Site being one of the key areas seeing significant transformation.

Through this initiative, Kenyans who have lived in substandard conditions now have a chance to apply for and secure their own homes.

The Journey of Milka Moraa

Moraa’s journey will not only highlight the struggles that so many face, but also the tangible change that the Affordable Housing Program is bringing to communities.

From the application process to receiving the keys to her new home, Moraa will walk us through each step.

The government’s support, including subsidies, low-interest financing and simplified application processes, is making it possible for people like Moraa to step out of the cycle of poverty and into the safety and stability of homeownership.

Moraa is set to become a homeowner days after she received over Ksh320,000 in donations from Kenyans.

A fundraiser was organized after the clip of Pastor Ng’ang’a telling off the woman at his Neno Evangelism Centre church went viral.

The fundraiser was organised by a police officer named Sammy Ondimu, who has been giving an update on the fundraiser.

Taking to his Instagram account, Sammy thanked those who chipped in including Content Creator Terence Creative for paying three months’ rent and paying school fees for the lady’s son.

As she moves closer to receiving the keys to her new home, her journey reflects the life-changing difference affordable housing is making in the lives of ordinary Kenyans.

The Affordable Housing Program is a critical pillar of the Kenya Kwanza Government and the Kenya’s Vision 2030, aimed at addressing the country’s housing deficit and uplifting the lives of millions of Kenyans.

By providing access to decent housing, a safe and affordable environment, and the chance for a better tomorrow, the government is not just building houses but investing in the future of its citizens.

The program encourages community development, reduces slum growth, and contributes to the overall economic development of the country.

The ambitious Mukuru Affordable Housing Project site was reclaimed from private developers by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in 2020.

Construction of the units began in March 2023 and will feature 26 blocks of bedsitters, 14 blocks of one-bedroom units, and 14 blocks of two-bedroom units.

The homes will be offered under an affordable rent-to-own model, with residents paying Ksh3,000 per month for bedsitters, Ksh4,000 for one-bedroom units, and Ksh5,000 for two-bedroom units over a 30-year period.

The total project cost exceeds Ksh7 billion, funded through the Housing Levy Fund.

In addition, the entire development is expected to be completed by 2026.
