Biography
Hailing from Kiambuu village of Ngiriambu location in Kirinyaga County, Mary Muthoni Muriuki is the Principal Secretary (PS) of the State Department for Health and Professional Standards under the Ministry of Health in Kenya.
She works under the direction of the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Health Dr. Deborah Mulongo Barasa to ensure quality service delivery and policy implementation.
Mary Muthoni Educational Background
Mary Muthoni Muriuki attended renowned educational institutions before pursuing her career and joining the government.
She attended Kabare Girls High school for her Secondary education and holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Strategic Management and Marketing from the University of Eastern Africa Baraton.
The PS also holds a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
Upon finishing her bachelor’s degree, Muthoni kickstarted her career as a tutor at Moi High School Mbiruri between 2002 and 2008.
She would later join Moi Girls School Nairobi as a teacher of English and Literature where she taught up to June 2012.
Muthoni Muriuki was the first female director at the Kenya National Chambers of Commerce & Industry (KNCCI), a role she held between 2016 and 2019.
She is also the founding & executive director of St-Petroc Premier School where she chaired its board until December 2022.
Mary is the founder of the Women in Business Magazine, and the 1st ever chairperson of Women in Business Awards Kenya.
The PS has also sat in the Tobacco Control Board of Kenya and served as a director in the African Women in Business Alliance.

County government role and appointment as state officer
Mary Muthoni joined the Kirinyaga County government under the leadership of Governor Anne Waiguru in 2019.
She assumed the role of Vice Chair, Kirinyaga Investment and Development Authority up to December 2022.
Later that month, Muthoni was thrust into the national spotlight when she was nominated as Principal Secretary for the State Department of Correctional Services by President William Ruto.
She would later be switched to the Ministry of Health in May 2023 where she is currently serving as a PS.
Her contributions have also seen her receive the Head of State Commendation & the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (C.B.S.).
Family
PS Muthoni is married to Jason Nyaga, with whom she has four children.
Her father is Mzee Phillip Muriuki Ngari who passed on in October 2024 and her mother is Agnes Kamori.
