Kenya Enters 7-Day Mourning

President William Ruto declared a seven-day national mourning period starting Wednesday, October 15, 2025, to honour the late Raila Amolo Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister and a key figure in the country’s democratic history.

President Ruto also postponed all his public engagements during the mourning period and urged other public servants to do the same as a mark of respect.

The Kenyan flag will be flown at half-mast across all public buildings, military installations, diplomatic missions, and naval vessels until Odinga’s burial.

The mourning period will last until sunset on the day of Odinga’s interment, which is yet to be officially announced.

During this time, all government officials and diplomats have been instructed not to fly the national flag on their vehicles.

Tributes from the Footballing World

In a statement on Wednesday, Gor Mahia, the club Raila Odinga passionately supported, also paid tribute to him as their Patron.

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of our beloved Patron, the Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga. He was a guiding light and a tremendous support to our club. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones. May he rest in perfect peace,” Gor Mahia wrote.

On his part, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed acknowledged Raila’s lifelong commitment to Kenyan football and urged Kenyans to mourn peacefully.

“Raila Odinga was local football’s strongest supporter. His commitment to the sport was unmatched, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations of players and fans.”

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya also reflected on Raila’s belief in the power of sport to unite the nation.

“Raila believed in the unifying power of sport, its ability to bring people together, nurture talent, and inspire patriotism. He was a towering statesman and a mentor to many, including myself,” Mvurya stated.

In addition, Kenya Football Fans Federation (KEFOFA) President Francis Liboyi, on behalf of the Kenyan football fans fraternity, expressed sorrow over the loss of a leader who championed youth and unity.

Special Sign

The suspension of FKF matches is a rare move, showing how deeply Odinga’s death has affected the country.

Clubs, players, and fans are expected to observe the mourning period with respect. The FKF has not yet announced when the matches will resume, but updates are expected after the mourning period ends.

Odinga’s death leaves a big gap in both politics and sports. He was a leader who inspired many and used football to connect with people across Kenya.
