Kenya’s veteran diplomat Ambassador Boaz Mbaya, who also served as a member of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s campaign team, has passed away.
In a statement, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi announced that Mbaya died on Sunday morning.
Mudavadi described Mbaya as a dedicated patriot who served Kenya with honor and wisdom both at home and abroad.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Amb. Boaz Mbaya this morning. The Valogooli community has lost a towering civic leader and mentor.
“My heartfelt condolences go to his wife, Florence Mbaya, their family, relatives, and friends. May you find comfort as you mourn a devoted family man and a patriotic leader who served Kenya with distinction,” stated Mudavadi.
Further, Mudavadi eulogized him as a political confidante whom he trusted and respected.
“I have lost a dear friend and political confidante. The bond we shared was rooted in mutual respect and unwavering trust.
“I fondly recall our exchange of ideas when he led the Former and Retired Ambassadors Association of Kenya (FRAA) to my office in October 2024,” added Mudavadi.

Who is the Kenyan Ambassador Boaz Mbaya
Ambassador Mbaya had a long and distinguished diplomatic career, representing Kenya in Ethiopia, Tanzania, France, and other countries.
He also served as Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and remained active in public policy after retirement.
Additionally, he led the Former and Retired Ambassadors Association of Kenya (FRAA) and ran a think tank, the Centre for Policy Analysis.

In 2019, Ambassador Boaz Mbaya published a book titled Kenya’s Foreign Policy and Diplomacy: Evolution, Challenges and Opportunities, through East African Educational Publishers in Nairobi.
The book offers a deep analysis of Kenya’s foreign relations and global positioning over six decades.
Furthermore, it has been hailed as an expert work which explores the major forces and events that have shaped Kenya’s diplomacy from the era of Kenyatta I in 1963 to Kenyatta II in 2019.
The late ambassador was also part of the Northern African Strategy team that campaigned for Raila Odinga’s bid for African Union Commission Chairmanship in 2024, bringing decades of experience to the continental campaign.
Amb. Mbaya is survived by his wife, Florence Mbaya, and their family.
