Dr. Abdi Mohamed is a healthcare executive and entrepreneur currently serving as the Chairman of the Social Health Authority (SHA). He was appointed to the position by President William Ruto on September 17, 2024, for a three-year term.
Since the official launch of SHA on October 1, 2024, Dr. Mohamed has been overseeing the transition from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the new health financing model. Before this appointment, he was an Independent Board Director at SHA.
Dr. Abdi Mohamed Career
Dr. Mohamed has worked in the healthcare sector for over 15 years. He began his medical career in 2009 at Malindi District Hospital in Kilifi County, where he worked under the Ministry of Health.
His responsibilities included patient assessment, treatment planning, inpatient admissions, ward rounds, and assisting with minor surgeries.
In August 2010, he joined Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) as a volunteer medical officer at Dadaab Refugee Camp where he provided emergency care, managed the paediatric unit, and handled night consultations across the hospital for three months.
In 2011, he co-founded Ladnan Hospital, a 50-bed facility in Pangani, Nairobi, aimed at providing accessible healthcare services. The hospital expanded over the years, adding a dialysis unit, intensive care units, and other services.
To scale up access to healthcare in the Northeastern Region, he later established another branch of Ladnan Hospital in Wajir, converting it from an outpatient clinic into a 20-bed hospital.
Dr. Mohamed also led negotiations that resulted in a merger between Ladnan Hospital and Metropolitan Hospital, a 150-bed facility in Nairobi. Following the merger, he served as Chief Operations Officer and Director, responsible for operations, integration, and financial management.
Besides running the Ladnan hospital, Dr Abdi sits on the board of various organizations. He is a Trustee of the Takaful Umbrella Fund and an Independent Director at Villgro Kenya.
He has also held various leadership roles, including:
- National Chair of the Kenya Association of Private Hospitals
- Chair of the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee at the Kenya Medical Association, and
- Council Member of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
Education and Community Work
Dr. Mohamed Abdi holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Nairobi (2003–2008).
Besides his official duties, Dr. Mohamed also participates in medical camps to improve access to healthcare for vulnerable populations, delivers medical and motivational talks in schools, and mentors young people in entrepreneurship.
Awards and Honors
In December 2014, Dr. Mohamed was featured in the Business Daily‘s Top 40 Under 40 project. The initiative highlighted men who have successfully climbed the corporate ladder or excelled in innovation and enterprise. The list also includes professionals such as lawyers, architects, doctors, and partners in accounting firms, recognized purely for their professional achievements.
