The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has announced a ban on the trade, distribution and sale of pharmaceutical products referenced to the Indian Pharmacopeia (IP) in Kenya.
India Pharmacopeia is a statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in the Government of India.
In the notice, the PPB stated that the company is not registered therefore, it cannot legally operate in Kenya.
“The Indian Pharmacopeia (IP) is not under the purview of the drug registration requirements in the country,” read part of the statement.
As such, the pharmacy and poisons board stressed that the Indian Pharmacopeia products’ standards are not compliant with Kenyan regulations.
The board has since directed all stakeholders to cease and desist from trading, importing or handling any unregistered products, including those with references to the Indian Pharmacopeia.
Additionally, PPB asked stakeholders to ensure that all pharmaceutical products in their possessions are duly registered and approved in line with the Pharmacy and Poisons Act.
Moreover, they must adhere to the requirements outlined in the Pharmacy and Poisons Act and any other relevant regulations.

Further Directives
Failure to comply with the directives, PPB stated, will attract severe regulatory actions.
This will include seizure of products, revocation of licenses and prosecution as stipulated in the law.

The board oversees all activities related to pharmaceutical practice, from evaluating professional qualifications to regulating the manufacture, import, and sale of medical products.

It regulates the Profession of Pharmacy and ensuring access to quality, safe and affordable health products and technologies.

Therefore, the board can counter check the unregistered pharmaceutical products in the Kenya Market and strictly prohibit them.
The Pharmacy and Poisons Board, monitors the market and takes the necessary enforcement actions to ensure compliance with the applicable regulatory framework.
