Murang’a Level 5 Hospital has redirected patients to seek medical attention at neighboring hospitals as the number of patients in the hospital increases.
The recent increase in the number of patients in the facility follows the expansion of the Murang’a County hospital infrastructure.
According to the county government of Murang’a, there has been a notable surge in patient numbers at the Level 5 facility in the last few months.
The number of outpatients and inpatients per day ranges from 1,500 to 2,000, which, according to the government, is compounded by the influx of patients from elsewhere and is straining the facility’s bed capacity.
“The hospital is attending to 1,500 to 2,000 patients daily (outpatients), while those ADMITTED are 500, which is equal to the established bed capacity,” read part of the notice from the Murang’a County government.
As the county government of Murang’a addresses the issues, patients have been urged to cooperate with health staff and managers to ensure positive outcomes for everyone.
Measures by the Government to address the Murang’a Level 5 Hospital Patient Surge
To address the high demand for health services and ensure good clinical outcomes, the Murang’a county government has decided to reorganize emergency staff in the casualty department.
Staff who are currently on leave will be recalled to the facility to help in administering patient care and ease the pressure from the increased number of patients.
Deployment of Marshals to guide patients to various points of care will also be carried out by the county to ensure ease across different hospital departments.
Additionally, the government plans to open new wards at the facility to ease the current congestion.
To ensure that all patients receive quality care, the government plans to establish linkages between the Level 5 facility and other county-level 4 hospitals to improve patient safety and ease pressure on the referral hospital.
Health professionals in the laboratory and the radiology department will also be required to work on a 24-hour shift to ensure that the lab and radiology services are manned 24 hours a day.
New hospital staff will be recruited with moderation by the government due to the constrained wage bill in the county.
The county has also requested that the assembly fast-track the Locum policy to address such emergencies and ensure that the facility offers standard patient care.
