President Ruto reinstates Wainaina as KU VC

His tenure was marked by several significant events including a high-profile land dispute with the government over a piece of university land intended for the World Health Organization (WHO) project.

This dispute led to his dismissal in August 2022 by the then President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, which was later reversed when he was reinstated three months later under President Wiliam Ruto’s government.

Wainaina later proceeded on annual leave, and Prof. Waceke Wanjohi was appointed as the acting Vice-Chancellor since April 15, 2024, indicating the end of his tenure in that official capacity.
