Roots Party Presidential candidate George Wajackoyah has proposed to grant pregnant women a 12-month maternity leave if elected President in the August polls.
Wajackoyah says he will increase the time from the current three months as per the Kenya Employment Act
He has promised that his government will amend the Act to allow expectant mothers stay away from work for nine months during the duration of the pregnancy and later extend for another three months after delivery.
“I will work out with my experts in that field. I will definitely have to bring in Canadians who have taken women values very highly to help me formulate the policy,” he said.
He cited an example of Canada where pregnant mothers have an option to go on maternity leave for 12 months or 18 months.
Consequently, Wajackoyah has at the same time proposed to offer expectant mothers a stipend to support them through the nine-month period.
“We want to take care of mothers right from the inception of the child and we feel that we want to give them enough money because we shall have enough of it from the business of marijuana,” he said.
“Protecting the health and welfare of mothers is the prerogative of the government,” he added.
The Roots party is expected to launch its manifesto on July 2 detailing what they intend to do for Kenyans should they win the August polls.
Wajackoyah has proposed to legalize and commercialize the production of marijuana and snake farming as a way of raising revenue to help clear the country’s debt.
He has also promised to hang all corrupt public servants as a means of fighting graft .
The Law professor has also threatened to depot all Chinese contractors should he assume the country’s leadership.
At the same time, he has said he will release all petty offenders from prison
