Dennis Muigai Ngengi, who also used the name Charles Karanja, became widely known in 2017 after appearing at several high-profile accident scenes across Kenya.
His repeated presence at major incidents earned him the nickname “chief witness” or “serial eyewitness.”
Among the incidents were the fatal helicopter crash and the road accident that claimed the life of former Nyeri Governor. At both scenes, Dennis Muigai presented himself as a key eyewitness.
In the first crash, Dennis Muigai Ngengi was interviewed as a witness and claimed to have been a “State pilot”.
He later appeared again at the crash that killed Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru on the Thika-Murang’a road, where he again gave an eyewitness account.
After those two incidents, authorities looked into Dennis Muigai Ngengi’s background and found multiple past cases involving impersonation and other offenses.
The last publicly reported information about Dennis Muigai Ngengi indicates that he was arrested by police in Ruiru, Kiambu County, on a Thursday in June 2020, while investigations into the case were ongoing.
Lake Nakuru Helicopter Crash Witnessed By Dennis Muigai
The Lake Nakuru helicopter crash occurred on October 21, 2017, when a Flex Air Charters helicopter, registration 5Y-NMJ, crashed into the lake shortly after taking off from Jarika County Lodge in Nakuru. All five people on board died.
The flight was headed to Mau Narok when the helicopter reportedly flew at a low altitude before plunging into the lake.
Rescue operations were delayed as emergency teams had to mobilize boats and divers to reach the wreckage.
Those who died included pilot Apollo Malowa and four passengers. Media reports later indicated that the passengers were linked to Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika’s communications team, with three identified as members of the team.
Investigators later found that the pilot had consumed alcohol before the flight. The report stated that he had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.041 percent, raising concerns about compliance with aviation safety standards.

Governor Wahome Gakuru’s Fatal Road Crash
Former Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru died in a road crash on the morning of November 7, 2017, at Kabati along the Thika-Sagana Highway in Murang’a County. He was traveling to Nairobi for a media interview when the vehicle veered off the road and hit a guardrail.
The vehicle was carrying four people: Gakuru, his personal assistant; Albert Kaguru, his bodyguard; Ahmed Abdi, his driver; and Samuel Kinyanjui Wanyaga. Gakuru was rushed to Thika Level 5 Hospital but died as doctors prepared to airlift him to Nairobi.
According to the driver, the accident occurred during heavy rain after a rear tire burst, causing the vehicle to swerve to avoid a lorry overtaking. Police initially treated the incident as a tire-burst crash, but it later became the subject of investigations and a public inquest.
In 2024, a court found the driver culpable for reckless driving in connection with the fatal crash. The case remains one of Kenya’s most widely discussed deaths involving a sitting governor due to the investigations and public scrutiny that followed.
